new member. hello all!

Postby ddenney » 01 25, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Just wanting to introduce myself and say hello. My name is Daric. Im from the midwest and am starting to gather info on an archery elk hunt I'm planning for 2017. Been wanting to do this for quite some time but decided to jump in with both feet and go for it. Been looking at colorado and wyoming.
Like I said I am a complete newbie and cannot wait to learn as much as I can so hopefully I can be successful in the field!

Welcome to the forum ddenney. It is good to have you in camp. I am sure you can find a lot of good information and more than a few friends here too. Watch out for RJ and his calling. He might lead you to think he is calling in a big bull for you and all that is out there in the brush is Indian Summer with his Master Blaster bugle.
If you are interested in Oregon, I can help some, but would need to know more about your hunting style and other preferences.
BTW, did I mention that Indian Summer can be into mischief around the old campfire too? :D

Welcome to the campfire Daric, glad to have you on board. Please pull up a log by the fire, a beverage of choice, and chime in whenever you wish. There's lotsa good information here and some pretty darn good hunters that are willing to help a person start on the right path when it comes to elk (and other big game) hunting. Kind of keep an eye on that Swede character, he likes to sit way, way up high in tall trees and watch everything going on...then, when you least expect it, he'll hurl a handful of well placed elk duds down when we're all sitting around the campfire and make everybody jump. Again, welcome. Check out the archived section here and Elknut's tips and clips for some major elk info overload ;)

Awesome welcome guys, thanks! Really sounds like a great forum to be a part of! Im just starting to gather information. I will be going with a friend of mine who's been going to colorado for a few years but says its just too hunted where they go. Last year in 7 days they only got onto one small bull.
Im a diehard bowhunter, and love chasing turkeys here. Im a tad aggressive in my hunting style. So I'm hoping that i can use that to my advantage in the elk mountains.
Swede: I'm all ears for other hunting opportunities! Thanks!

Welcome!

If you can hunt Turkeys, you can hunt Elk. Many of the tactics and calling strategies are similar. Just a slightly larger trophy to haul home.

Most of the guys here are Archery hunters, a few Muzzleloader hunters, and some that do it all.

The first thing a guy should do is get a copy of Elknuts Playbook, preferably with the audio CD also, and read it about 5 times. Listen to the CD every chance you get, and practice calling in the car while listening to the sounds of the elk on the audio CD. This will get you a long ways down the road to success.

Don't underestimate what kind of shape you need to be in to come West and hunt Elk. The altitude will kick your butt, and you will be hiking rough terrain from dawn till dusk. You must be in excellent condition to really enjoy yourself and hope to have success.

Beware - archery Elk hunting is the crack cocaine of the hunting world - highly addictive, and expensive

Im from Missouri. Im waiting until 2017 because i already have an archery antelope and an archery mule deer hunt lined out for this fall and not sure i could pull all three off in the same year. Lol. Plus it gives me a bit more time to get into elk shape and educate myself a little more on where to go! Lol
