Private Land Owner Tags (NM)

Postby juglow » 01 20, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Hi, does anyone know how thee are obtained? I have a friend that goes with his friend every year and are able to hunt private land through the landowner tag allocation. I don't know how he gets them (its hush hush) and invitation only. He said they are 2K per tag?

You have to know the name of the person that has the LO tags. The DOW doesn't give them out.
I did one several years ago.The owner gives you a certificat/voucher and you take that to the DOW to buy the tag .

I assume you are talking about elk. The landowner lists are published annually. There are two different types of landowners, ones that generally get tags every year through the EPLUS program and ones that are in the smaller Small Contributing Ranch (SCR) pool (these guys get tags some years and not in other years-pretty conviluted program). Below are links to most recent elk lists.

I'm guessing that the price of elk tags will be going up as the State is going after landowners to collect gross receipts tax on landowner tags that most probably weren't paying before.

They are vouchers that allow you to bypass the draw. They're not tags, those will need to be purchased in addition to what you pay for the voucher.

Simply ask your friend about his vouchers. He can give you the LO name or broker he goes thru. You can also cold call off the list but nearly all of them are spoken for by brokers nowadays.

Also, some landowner tags are ranch only, while others are unit wide. I'm not sure if that has changed this year, but it's something you'll want to ask about when contacting ranchers or brokers. Good luck!
