Can anyone recommend a good, non-diaphragm bugle? I about swallow the diaphragm call every time I try to use it. My neighbors are gonna love me...

Bryan, I'm assuming you're talking about an internal reed bugle. First of all, internal reed bugles are a distant second IMO to external diaphragms and a grunt tube. If at all possible, continue to work on using a diaphragm and grunt tube (you can get all the elk sounds using that combination). Perhaps try one of the Wapiti River Outdoors diaphrams? They have patented little slits in the sides that help prevent the gag reflex some folks experience with diaphrams (one of our sponsors here). But, if you absolutely can't get the diaphragm thing down, I always recommend only two internal reed elk calls. The Berry Thunder Bugle or Elknut's XTR Bugle. Both work great and will get the job done. Just some thoughts. RJ

I have not tried Elknut's external reed bugle or one from Wapiti River. Of the ones I have used, I like the Berry Thunder Bugle best. They sound good enough that I always end up giving it away to some poor soul, that is amazed at the quality of sound it produces.

Elknut' s Little Bugler. call. You can use it as a very good bull bugle,but take the mouth piece out and use it as a cow call. It's a reed type .I also keep a Skeery and one other one on a lanyard around my neck to get different cow calls

I can't argue that certain people with diaphragm calls may or may not sound better than I do with my Primos external reed bugle. Some do some don't imo. You will catch flack & not be near the caller or hunter to some by not using a diaphragm solely but the punched tags is where it's at. I can say one can call in plenty of elk using whatever call you become proficient with. I keep a diaphragm in my mouth at all times when hunting but it's not my go to call when bugling. I haven't taken the time to become an expert with one in doing so but I don't feel not doing so has hampered me much if any at all in calling in bulls. Get good with what is easy for you & it will work very well.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am having a heck of a time producing even nominal sound and like I said, it gags the hell out of me. Been at it for months and I even trimmed down the material on the backside of the call hoping that would help.

Quite honestly, I could care less about catching flack. I catch a lot of flack for using a Whisker Biscuit too

Hey Longspeak74,

In all honesty I say use whatever non reed bugle you can make decent sounds with. Now many will see this and know I am a total reed guy for all my sounds. But in saying that Some guys just have a very hard time with reeds.

I tried the thunder bugle and did not care for the sounds and found it hard to use. Terminator is easy but everyone and there dog has one. It would be ok if you only did 2 note bugles with it but they are famous for hitting 4-5 notes up and back down the board and that's not good !!

I would recommend you give me a call and we can talk about the issues your having with reeds. This way I can set you up with a reed that will be easy for you to learn with. Heck I'll even send you said reed for Free !! You give me 5 minutes on the phone once you get it and I'll have you making sounds !! As for the gag thing........we all go through it. Heck I still gag every day brushing my teeth and tongue !!
Keep at it and the gag goes away. It's like working out.......no pain.....no gain !! Push through it and be tough. You will shed some tears but it won't kill you. Trust me I went through it when I was 14 and now I'm a RMEF 2015 World Elk Calling Champion running a game call business. To this day I still gag on other manufactures reeds !! Mine are different from all the rest !!

There are no guarantee's in life but I can guarantee this........you stick with learning how to use a reed and you will never look back !! That I guarantee !!

Hey Trav,

I'd like to give you a shout to talk about different reed options but I'm down here in the States. Is there any issues with cell provider charges I should know about prior to making an out of country call.
