Broadheads

Hey all,

I've taken a few elk with the Slick Trick magnums and have had good blood trails with them (even without a complete passthru). However, my son didn't recover a bull this year after hitting it too far forward. I didn't see (but did hear) the impact point due to trees and he said he may have it too far forward. No blood trail or arrow was found. So, I'm looking for some recommendations -- I know you probably can't go wrong with any of them, but would appreciate any feedback on in the field performance for the cut-on-contact broadheads I'm looking at:
- G5 Montec
- G5 Striker
- Magnus Black Hornet
- Shuttle T-Lock

I've used Slick Tricks and Black Hornets. Both Slick Trick mags and Razor Tricks. Taken both elk and deer with them. Taken elk and deer with the Black Hornets as well.

I will say, IMO, poor blood trails and unrecovered animals have very little to do with the BH choice.

I like all 3 heads. The Slick Trick mag is the toughest and best of the bunch. You simply can't beat an all steel ferrule. That is also one of the downfalls of the head, because they use a stainless ferrule the head has to be small due to weight, this leads to a short head with steep blade angles. I would like them to be a little larger and more streamlined.

The Razor Trick is #2. Love the cut on contact with a blade not a chisel point. Again, stainless ferrule, very tough head, but small with steep blades. The tip is not the most durable and will bend and deform if you hit something hard. I have rolled a few tips on them. I actaully prefer this head and it is my go to but since they have stopped making them once their gone you are SOL.

Black Hornet. Good BH. It is a big BH and I like that. It has a cast aluminum ferrule which is a weak spot. With how the bleeder attaches they take out half of the material in the ferrule right where the ferrule mates with the collar that buts up against the shaft. This is a huge weak spot. They bend and break easily in this spot. I haven't broken one in an animal but I don't trust them. I shot a mature WT buck, frontal shot at 25 yards, entered near side of neck and exited just in front of the opposite hind leg, head was fine, impressive performance. I still don't trust them.

I shoot my BH's a lot. I always have 8-10 arrows in my practice quiver. 6 will have FP's the rest BH's. Every single round I shoot the BH's, every time I shoot. I have broken and bent a bunch of the Black Hornets. As in, 9 or 10 of them in less than a year. I've been shooting the ST's for about 6 years now and have never broken or bent a ferrule on one. I shoot a Glen Del Full Rut with the BH's. There is a piece of metal strapping in the front and back of the target above the legs. When you hit it with the Black Hornet it completely destroys the BH. When you hit it with a ST, it breaks the blades. I have also both broken and bent the Black Hornets hitting the ground with pass throughs on the target.

As far as accuracy it is a wash. They all fly the same for me. I attribute that to bow tune more than BH. You can get any head to fly.

For toughness and quality ST mag, Razor Trick, Black Hornet.

My preference, Razor Trick, ST mag, Black Hornet.

I'll keep using all three. I'm not going to use the Hornet's on elk, just don't trust the design.

I have yet to shoot an elk with one, but I have shot a lot of whitetails with a Magnus Stingers with bleeder blades. I love these broadheads and that's all I shoot. I have shot deer before that didn't even know they were shot. Just have to get them razor sharp.

Those are all great heads that will do great. My group all shoots Stingers (similar to Black Hornets). For elk we just stick with two blades to get that little extra penetration. I have seen several far scapulas hit that we still get two holes in the elk. Magnus also has a no questions replacement warranty that is tough to beat.
