Griz

How about a thread for Griz stories/encounters. Only bring this up because I am considering hunting some heavy griz country in Wyoming for archery in 2016. South edge of Shoshone.

My thought is always have bear spray, sidearms always be alert, and know how to store your food. Other than that not much else you can do. if I do all those things and the good lord has a big sow griz charge me, than maybe its my time. No better place to go then in the mountains doing what I love.

Obviously lots of pros and cons to hunting bear country. the cons fairly obvious. Pros in my opinion is generally you will get away from hunter pressure in heavy griz country, as griz drive out the more novice hunter or those hunters who do not want to do the extra works that it takes to be prepared in griz country (i.E. storing food correctly). I would maybe also say that elk and griz are in the same area as griz will move to were elk are so they can hunt them. this can work both ways as you could also say elk move out of griz areas to survive???? Thoughts?

You're right on one thing. Those of us who are novice elk hunters wouldn't dare venture into griz country!

Grizzlies cover ground. Plus they hunt solo. So it's not like elk know they are around and move out. They coexist.

One thing you might consider so you can sleep at night is going to a farm supply store like Agway and get a portable electric corral to fence the perimeter of your camp site.

Don't cook in the tent you sleep in. Burn as much as you can and hang any other garbage well away from camp until you are ready to pack it out. Personally I would not call from within thick cover. The only other thing I can think of is keep some corn and potatoes in your pack so that the bears have a well balanced diet.

I proposed to my girl friend on a beautiful evening in September at Glacier Lake in the Mission Mountain Wilderness in Montana. Definitely Griz country. We hiked out in the dark amidst ripe huckleberry bushes, you could smell the bears. No weapon or bear spray, I told her it was it was a test of trust and faith. When she started singing "Teddy Bear's Picnic" I knew she definitely was a keeper!

By the way, she said yes and we've been married 32 years.

Three things scare me in the woods, crazy people, cow moose, and grizzlies, in that order. Ive seen one grizzle bear in all the time I spend in grizzle country. Not counting Glacier and Yellowstone
This year, each of the times I saw the local CO she checked to make sure I was wearing my spray.
Follow the basics the Indian Summer posted. And if you find fresh sign,.. hunt someplace else that week
