Homemade knife-made from a file.

I have been wanting to make a knife for a while now (years) and finally I got around to it! It's made from an old file- I know its not case hardened, and its high carbon tool steel- perfect. Being out of hacksaw blades, and not having an abrasive blade for the circular saw meant cutting with a dremel tool, not cool! To save yall from anymore boring details I'll just post some pictures!

I haven't really sharpened it yet, and was surprised at how sharp it was straight off of the bench grinder!

I wasnt sure as to what temperature to temper it at after quenching-so I just went with 400-450 F, I wish I softened it up a tad more because it is taking longer to sharpen than I'm used to.

Nice work. What are you going to do for a handle? It's best to drill holes for that before you harden it. If you are interested I have some nice spalted wood that has been stabilized.

I was going to cut up a deer antler from my 'collection' but since I have only shot spikes, the antlers arent big enough... I have some wormy maple and red cedar from my stockpile of wood for carving, etc. I was thinking cedar, but as you pointed out, I didn't drill the holes before hardening (I was busy and forgot!)

My caping knife was made from a file. It has all of the characteristics I want in a caper. Thick hard steel, not a very long blade so strong. I love it. I think it's cool that whoever made it left the file grooves (whatever they are called) on the blade everywhere except where it was tapered down and sharpened. The blade length is only 2 3/4 inches. Overall length 7 inches.

There are no studs through the laminated wood handle. It looks to be glued on with black resin and the file grooves make for a strong bond. It's bullet proof!

Sweat looking knife Joe!!

Ive made a few skinners from files and bandsaw( lumber/log blades) We epoxied the handles on. I left one knife in a tree in northern SD ( yep we found a tree) another was left on my bumpers,.. the loss of both knives still hurts :cry:

Hey, I have that exact kind of rasp! Maybe I'll make another knife this time out of a rasp like that! That thing is super sweet looking!

I think some super strong epoxy should hold the wood to the metal.
