New old guy in GMU 14

Postby oldnovice » 10 13, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Hi Elk nuts! I am a novice elk hunter in search of some basic info for GMU 14 during second rifle. I haven't hunted for around 40 years (used to do some pheasant and ducks in California). Now that I am retired, I want to test myself and see if I can get the Monarch of the Mountains. I am in pretty decent shape for 62 years old and don't mind getting dirty! I am not looking for any specific spots, just some general intel. I have the Start My Hunt map for the area I am looking at but it still covers a lot of ground. I am thinking that I may have to go a bit high up since the weather has been rather dry and warm. I also have a cow tag for GMU 13 (bought on a whim) but I may trade that for a fourth OTC rifle. Thanks for any help you want to give!

First of all, welcome to the forum oldnovice. Pull up a log by fire and chime in whenever you wish! I know zip about hunting the great state of Colorado (I'm assuming that's what your referring to) but I'm sure somebody who does will chime in. Again, welcome. RJ

Thanks guys! Yea, it is in Colorado just east of Steamboat Springs. I live in Castle Rock so it is a little far for scouting. I have a timeshare that I traded for Steamboat for the week to use as a base camp (really roughing it!).

Got up early and headed out just before daybreak. Saw some fresh scat (mostly deer) and a lot of deer tracks. A few elk tracks. No live animals except the squirrels. Ran into a local land owner out for a run on a jeep trail. He said that the elk have been very scarce this year. He has seen more moose for a change. Others are saying the same thing in the south end of the Routt NF. May have to go farther up or north.
