ideas for new rain gear

In the past rifle seasons I always just carried a military issue poncho in my pack while elk hunting. I never really thought about it being noisy to move around in until this last archery elk hunt I had. I found that I could not draw back my bow quietly while wearing it, so I just took it off. I am in the market for some real rain gear before next season. My budget is limited, so no $500 suits. But I have no problem spending $100 or more for a top and bottom. Any recomendations?

I have frog togs top and bottoms. They are quiet and light. They are rolled up in my pack and ready to go if it rains or I need an extra layer if I spend the night away from camp. I'm not sure how durable they would be if your hunting in a brushy area. I have used then a couple of times with no issues.

Funny I was looking at that very brand. It's within my price range. I have only seen them online, not in person. Only concern I have is about the durability as you mentioned. Do they seem like they may not be durable?

I don't think they would take much abuse in thicker brush. I have only actually worn mine twice in 3 years and they still look brand new. They stay rolled up in the bottom of my pack. I bought them at MC Sports if that helps.

I've used the frog toggs a lot over the past few years they're not the most durable on the market but they work pretty well for just a cheap packable rain gear, I always keep a small roll of 1 inch wide duck tape with me and just patch any holes when they get to bad.

Believe it or not, Bass Pro Redhead stuff is pretty good. I've used one of their jackets for the past 4 years with only one complaint that it doesn't have ventilation zippers. I've upgraded to the First Lite jacket but it never rained on me this season to try it out.

Thanks for the info guys! I do not spend enough time in the rain to need anything like Kuiu, they would spend more time in my pack than anything else. So I am gonna go to Sportsmens Warehouse and check out the Frogg Toggs to see what they feel like. If I do not like them then ill go with the Red Head stuff. It really was reasonably priced, only issue is that the nearest Bass Pro Shop is 6 hours away. Thanks again guys

119.00 . This is very compact, lightweight. Not the kind of gear you would want to wear all day every day for a week - not tough enough, not much warmth. But perfect for sitting out afternoon thunderstoms in September. Does not take much space in the pack.

I bought a rarely-used Core4 Torrent from Elknuts Classifieds. About $60. Stuffs into own pockets, weighs less than 1 lb, has pit zips. It is quiet, keeps me dry. and makes a nice morning/evening layer above 50 degrees. It replaced a surplus Army goretex and is a huge improvement over that. A quality, durable rain jacket is worth the $, it will last for years and keep you hunting when the skies open up.

I second Elkduds. Have a set of the Torrent rain gear from Core4Element. Great stuff. Lightweight and quiet.

If you take your time and watch you can get a good deal.
