Cow trophy ideas??

Postby swmoelk » 10 13, 2015 •  [Post 1]

As some of you know I'm taking my wife on her first big game hunt in a few weeks and I need some ideas on a momento from a cow, if she kills one. I'm pretty confident that she will because Indian Summer has taken care of us on that end . As long as the weather cooperates she's golden. I had heard that cows had ivory teeth like bulls and thought about getting them set in some type of jewelry. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

A tanned hide (fur on) is mighty nice! Would give her something to touch as she walks by where it hangs on a wall as a reminder of the hunt.

Maybe earrings or a ring from the ivories? Or how about a framed photo of you and her with her trophy?

I Like the tanned hide, ivory ear rings, might as well just clean and bleach out the skull. There are some people that do amazing carving work on skulls. I am not one of them, but I wish I was

The ivories from a cow are good. I have used some of my ivories as zipper flogs on my pack. They look great and fit with the outdoor fit idea. When she throws her pack on she will always be reminded of her hunting success.

Thats a great idea.

My wife has been taking lots of pictures and making picture books. She use to have them made at Walmart,.. but Costco is now more convenient for us
A few weeks back she went on a humanitarian trip to Guatamala with her brother and dad, She had a picture book printed,.. then had her dad hand write captions or stories,.. My mother-in -law was so thrilled she was crying (My MIL didnt/couldn't go)

Note: Disclaimer here! This post was edited by someone else. I have no idea where the paragraph immediately above came from. My wife doesn't take pictures or make picture books. My mother in law passed away in 1992 or 1993. My wife's dad passed away before that, and my wife has never been in Guatemala. The paragraph sounds great, but it is just not me. :D Swede December 2016

Thanks guys for all the ideas. It's a pretty special deal for her and after we get back I'll put up the whole story and pictures of it all. We aren't leaving for another 19 days but the countdown has begun .

A tanned elk hide is one of the nicest hides I've ever seen.

Another vote on the tanned hide!

My father-in-law had the hide of a mt. sheep my wife shot when she was 16, the hide spent most of our married life on the back of the couch

Tanning with hair on will be about $30 per squarer foot. A decent size cow will be about $25+ per square foot.

If you go this route, remove the leg portion of the hide.

Tannerys will stretch out the hide and measure across the longest dimension and the same with the length. So you might pay for a lot of are that has no hide in it.
That is from tip of the end of leg hide to the other.

My wife enjoys her elk ivory jewelry.

The real trophy is what goes in the freezer. Make a clean, fast kill, then deal w the carcass as discussed in the Wild Game Processing thread here. Every time you grill steak or burgers, make crockpot chili, enjoy sizzling fajitas, etc, you get to recall the hunt.

Lefty: I did not think anyone would see my disclaimer since it is well back in the series of posts. I knew is was just a mistake and it was in no way offensive. BTW: I have made my share of computer mistakes, but I blame it on auto correct. :D I looked at what I thought I wrote a year ago just to see what was there. The paragraph in question just did not fit.
