Advertising for Elk

Postby one_elk » 10 02, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Ok so heres my story. As some of you know the season in CO was hot and windy and we certainly didn’t see the elk movement we have seen in past. However my wife had cow tag for the muzzle loader season so we worked particularly hard during that season to find her an elk, we had some almost close encounters but the elk in our area seemed to be done moving very much at all very shortly after sunrise and until just a squeak before any shooting light was gone. So one morning we head out to one of favorite areas to spot from, set up our scope and picked the hill side apart shortly after it got light enough to see we spotted a couple of bulls and a few cows, things are looking up now. We watched them head to a bedding area and decided we would try our luck at intercepting them as they headed to their feeding grounds later that afternoon. Spent the day doing various camp chores and headed out to our parking spot from where we would start our hike back to the general area where we had seen the elk…On the way up this two track road, that gets a fair bit of use, we saw ahead of us a utility trailer parked just off of the road, we thought wow pretty long rough road to pull a trailer up, as we got closer to the trailer we could see it was on a jack and missing a wheel, indeed a rough road. Also on the side of the trailer was a chalk board as you can see below with a message announcing they had seen elk in the same area we were heading to….guess some folks just miss sharing their experiences on the internet and that they feel compelled to share with world where they had recently seen elk, mighty generous I guess and I must say I never seen that kind of advertisement before… but I guess I am a bit more selfish with that kind of info….anyway good to see it finally cooling off this has been the warmest and windiest season I can remember, or that I have logged in my journal, based on 40+ years of hunting elk here in CO..

Looks like he's leaving a message for his hunting partner, no harm in that! (grin)

I know a lot of people are tight lipped about whether they see elk or not. For me it all depends on where the encounter takes place and the attitude of the people im talking to. some people get the classic.. this land is bare and nothing lives here line, others get the truth.. not the biggest herd, but some dandy elk no doubt.
