when your spot gets too crowded

Postby powderhogg01 » 09 11, 2015 •  [Post 1]

My spot which has been mostly free of hunters has suddenly became a hot spot. I've got a huge camp right where I've been waiting out a nice deer at night, fat guys hauling a$$around on side by sides with no care about staying on the road . to have some private land to keep and hunt would be the best thing ever. rough day when you walk out to your truck for the evening sit where you have been for weeks to find a massive camp. bonus of the day is i finally heard some bugles today.. hopefully that means they are getting going..

I mean don't get me wrong.. there is enough forest and elk for everyone.. but to head up the mountain on foot and to come down to some massive camp literally right next to my truck... maybe the other spot will have more active elk anyways.. much harder to get to.

That sucks, man. I know the feeling though, only happened once so far but it's heartbreaking. I had found a draw that had an old access road that was closed for motor vehicles. Actually got time to do a good scouting trip that year, saw plenty of elk sign through the area, made my plan and headed in there opening morning only to find two 4 wheelers parked and a spike camp set up. I really hope this isn't the future of hunting.

yup. plan B entails a bit for hiking, but the area is generally unhunted to to the amount of foot work you have to do. I am with a completely green hunter(who was as disheartened as I to find the big camp set up) I dont care if I get an elk this year, but really want him to at least see and hear some elk activity.. more then just hoof prints by the water or wallow.
We agreed that these people cruising the roads with beers in the cup holders and guns on the rack were enough of a reason to leave the area.. at least for the weekend. I know a lot of people muzzleload.. nothing wrong with it.. but man if it is not frustrating to be sitting in ambush and have someone blow by and chase the herd away that was only 70 yards out.
such is public land hunting I suppose.. likely why the good area are so dang hard to draw.
