New hunter on the block!

Hi ladies/ gents! I have been lurking on this forum soaking up knowledge like a sponge for a while. Finally decided to become part of the family here. A bit about myself... I have been hunting since i was about 7. My Dad would have me in the woods every chance he had. Needless to say the woods is now my sanctuary. I am from the great state of Texas and have hunted pretty much all of the free roaming species. I dont care for exotics in the high fences. Anyways as a young kid i would watch nothing but hunting shows as these were my cartoons. I quickly fell in love with elk hunting and the scenery of the old vhs movies. I have never once hunted elk due to not having enough money for it to be feasible. BUT i am bound and determined to make it to CO next hunting season for my very first hunt. Im not getting any younger and we only get to live this life once, so i figure what the heck. I hunt deer and pigs with a long bow and recurve bow(depending on which ever one that calls my name loud before the hunt lol). But i will be doing my first couple elk hunts with a rifle. Sorry for the long read but i just wanted to introduce myself. if there are any experienced elk hunters that are around my area (Houston,Tx) that wouldnt mind showing a rookie the ropes, i would appreciate it!

Hello brother! Up here in Emory Tx. Can't offer much advice as I have only been once and that was with rifle-in my book doesn't count. I too am gearing up for 2016 figured same as you , once in a lifetime or maybe two

Awesome. Do you do the draw or OTC? Im just wanting to get my feet wet in this mountain hunting with a rifle. Its going to be a big learning experience. Im personally going to need to learn elk and the art of calling before i go crawl out there with my stick and string.

The best way to learn how to kill elk with a rifle is to hunt them with a bow and then go back and pick up where you left off. States like Wyoming and Montana allow you to hunt both bow and gun on the same license. That's priceless. So my advice would be to not choose where you decide to call home based on how close to your home it is. While the shortest drive may be to the state next door... the longest drive is the one back home with no elk.

Welcome. My advice is just to do it and learn as you go. There is nothing more satisfying than stepping into an unknown situation and figuring out a few things and coming out successful.

Every where and in between as far as Texas I have a place in Eldorado for turkey,Laredo for deer,Hamilton and Sabina for dove and quail, as for around the house here in Emory I have 300 acres of my own in Lake Fork creek bottom. I can fill a freezer off the back porch but I don't I like to watch those ones except the stinking hogs....recently I have been spending time in Kansas really big deer there.

Welcome fellow Texas hunters. I am also thinging about putting a group together for a CO hunt next year. I have one scheduled for this year in northern New Mexico during Thanksgiving week. I'm planning on a late season spot and stalk of some mature bulls that have herded back up together.
