Pepper for black files

Postby SarcasmPhD » 09 04, 2015 •  [Post 1]

So I'm reading that black pepper is what you should use to deter black files from elk meat. Then I read cayenne pepper is the way to go. And last but not least, chili pepper. Of course there's the black pepper/chili pepper combo. Black pepper/cayenne pepper mix.

What are your thoughts/suggestions for preventing flies for blowing eggs on elk meat?

On my deer last year we used chili powder on the entry/exit wound, eyes, nose and mouth as that's what the flies were mostly drawn to. It seemed to work pretty well and let us focus on the field dressing and not fly/bee/wasp repellent with pine boughs.

You can't forget the citric acid spray..
Flies can be a big problem and ruin your meat in a hurry. Have a plan.
I also am wondering what is the best method??

You want red chili pepper. Nothing else will be needed.

I've used black pepper on a wilderness hunt in Montana and the flies left the meat alone.
