Bulls are Heading Harem to Bed.....Now What?

Postby Trophyhill » 08 28, 2015 •  [Post 1]

So you've heard bulls screaming before the sun comes up and you're heading their way only to realize the bull that you suspect is a herd bull is getting further away.

What's your plan to turn him around or at least slow down or stop long enough for you to work in close and hopefully a shot opportunity?

In my brief but enjoyable elk killing career, this has proven most difficult for me. Especially high altitude CO hunting where an elk takes 5 minutes to travel what takes a human 30 or more.

dave, when you figure this out let me know, PLEASE. ill give you a call in a week and a half when im back down south. as for your question, id say the only real option would be to dog the herd and put them to bed. I know they cover ground fast like you mentioned but your not close enough to pose a threat to the herd bull, he has cows with him so if you cow call he might bugle and chuckle calling you to him but not slowing them down. the one thing that GS says often is to call the bulls cows away from him. are you close enough to pull that off ? like you I love hunting dark timber, id say this could be the best option if its possible to dog them and not let them know you're there until your in the bedroom ;)

Shoot the smaller satellite bull that is dogging the herd and comes into your cow calls. That almost worked for us yesterday but I had no shot opportunity on the bull and the guy I was with missed the cow that was with him.
