Am I too serious about elk hunting!!!!!

OK well at work I have been going Elk crazy like the rest of you...And we have elk hunting videos on all day and that doesn't help the fever ...But what really CHAPS MY @$$ are the people that are drawing amazing elk tags in the gila national forest and the stories that they all telling me ..Let me explain....So I had this guy come up to the counter and tell me that he drew a 16D tag ...I said congrats and asked him what brought him in today ...He looks me dead in the eye and says Why the hell should I buy a $500 bow ? I replied and said there is no need to buy a $500 dollar bow ....and then asked him what bow he is currently shooting ?he tells me he doesn't have one and for the prices he has been seeing around town that he is not going to go on this hunt because bows are to expensive.... Then I been getting guys that have hunts all over that start September 1st and they don't have a bow and they are going to borrow a Buddy's ...I had another guy that had a 1900s PSE bow (Old Bow)..sets it on the counter and asks how much it would cost to do a tune up on his bow...I look at this thing and I am thinking to myself holy $h**) and tell him that he needs a new string and tell him what it would cost ...he says I didnt even pay that much for the whole bow!!!!He then proceeds to tell me that I don't know what I am talking about and wants to talk to another tech...So my co worker tells him the same thing ...He says there is nothing wrong with his string ..(keep in mind this bow is older than the hills and had to be stored in a barn or a storage unit for years) the strings are falling apart as we touch them ...I tell him do not draw it back...BET YOU GUYS CAN GUESS WHERE THIS IS GOING... He pulls back and snap and it blows up in his face...string goes everywhere and peep fly's ...He then asks how much would it be to fix it...I just cant believe that people take this stuff so lightly or maybe I am way to crazy.....Sorry for the rant but I had to get this off my chest ...This has been eating me away ..I can understand using old equipment I have been there and done that ..But not having anything for the whole hunt and knowing since April come on...I mean We all live for this stuff and can't wait to next year draw and have all these tags going to waste because of neglegents ....Jesus take the wheel and help me get thru work and have a awesome deer and elk hunt this year...once again sorry for the rant and thanks for listening god bless..

Sounds like retail hell! Some people seem to exist just to piss us off. I hope you have a # of customers you like and enjoy helping, that is the upside of working in a business you are passionate about. Good luck this fall.

wow just crazy. Seems really crazy to me, but I'm a bit anal about my equipment and being prepared. Hunting is a year round endeavor in my opinion just to stay sharp, prepare and be in shape. I think the only thing I wish I had more time for is scouting. A lot of the time I'm combing google earth instead of putting boots on the ground in some areas just because I don't have the time.

Lol all very valid points.......and I actually never asked about the video footage... ..if I can even get the footage it would be awesome ....it would make a lot of people spit coffee all over there screen ...

Between dad and myself we have owned/operated an archery shop for 25+ years. The craziest customer I ever had was a guy that came in on the first day of WI turkey season looking to buy the cheapest used bow he could find, ONE ARROW AND ONE of those "sharp things for the end." He had been out turkey hunting when a large buck walked by his blind and he was going to go out the next morning and kill him. He picked out an old Bear Grizzly recurve because it was just like the one he had as a kid. I explained arrows are sold in groups of three, six or twelve. You don't go to the grocery and buy one egg. I also explained how broadheads are packaged and sold.

He was adamant about getting his archery equipment, almost argumentative. So I took his money. I'm very confident that deer is still alive.

I know what you mean. I hang out at the local bow shop at the lairs table and see all kinds of idiots come in there with bows and crossbows so old they don't even make parts for them anymore. Tim the store owner will try to be honest with them and tell them they are better off buying a new bow then fix theirs because they'd have less in it, but they will insist he fixes their 1980's bow and then they are mad because it's not fast or what ever. Most of the time it's not that they don't have the money to buy something decent it's just they think they are getting ripped off because the new bows are to expensive. They don't even consider they owe it to their prey to shoot something accurate or for their own safety.
I got a buddy that I've watched spend 5 grand on one gun but said a new bow was to expensive. He's probably got 25 AR that he rarely shoots but him and I drew a tag in NM and he wouldn't buy a new bow. He was shooting an old bowtech which was one of the first bows they came out with. It took us 5 yrs to get this tag but didn't care enough to workout or upgrade his equipment. He did go on a few 3d shoots with me before the season but that was it.
Everytime I take a new person out west with me for their first elk hunt and probably their only bow hunt they do the same thing. don't get in shape and start shooting their bow 2 weeks before they leave. IT DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!

i have a buddy of mine that wanted us to put in for NM elk season together, so we did. same exact hunts on both applications. i drew first season archery elk, he drew second season. we still figured that we could make things work and help each other hunt their season. well, it turns out he doesnt have the time off from work to help me hunt at all. that was fine as i enlisted my daughter , age 16 to help me. she has spent countless hours learnign to call and scouting with me to learn all she coudl to help me out. WE sstart our hunt next weekend. I bought a new to me bow just 4 weeks ago and it is already tuned to perfection and is field ready along with my back up bow.

My buddy had his bow restrung over the summer and just 3 weeks ago begun to shoot it and stretch the srtings and cables in. as of this week, he still needed to sight it in and he had done no prep work at all. he didnt even know where his camo was at. he is totally unprepared and i actually fel sorry for him. I am still taking time off to go help him hunt his season as he is a really close friend of mine. I wouldnt do this for just anyone but he is like my brother. it is fustrating indeed but i have come to find that some people are just like this and they really cant help themselves. its just who they are. you take them or leave them , but in the end they are who they are.

Set up the chrono one day and a guy had his old crutch of a bow, circa 80ish browning compound with the real thick wood riser. He shoots through the chrono and it blinks 140 f/s almost like it can't believe it itself. The guy looks at me with a big smile and said "pretty quick" I looked at him and said the guy that just left (Jarrod Washburn, retired MLB pitcher for Angels and Seattle) can throw a ball faster than that!

I guess it's all perspective on what's important to you. I work out for 9 months just to get ready for the season. Practice my calls till my wife can't take it anymore! lol Shoot my bow every morning before work and sometimes after. I live for elk hunting. There's nothing better IMP but this year I'm not going so I haven't worked out much and haven't picked up my bow but once. I need to start because whitetail season is fast approaching and I need to be ready.
