Crazy or not? I'm looking on craigslist at landowner permits. Do I understand that a landowner permit allows hunting within the entire unit (public land that is)? Is it crazy to look on craigslist for those?

I'm assuming here that you would purchase one (at a substantially higher rate) but you get access to the entire unit thus you can hunt the landowner or the public land. True or false?

It isn't crazy to look on Craigslist, in fact in the past I have purchased LO vouchers when I was unsuccessful in the draw. Technically you are not buying the "tag/license" itself. It is a voucher that the LO receives that has a number on it. You need that number to purchase the actual tag/license from Game and Fish. So you need to purchase the voucher and then you can purchase the tag/license.

The voucher will be for either Unit Wide or Ranch Only. Unit Wide is what you are asking about where you hunt all the public along with any ranch that is enrolled in the Unit Wide program. There is a list of LO's for each unit on the NMGF website. Good luck finding the properties though because the maps are a joke.

keep in mind that after buying the voucher you still have to pay the state for tag and license!

A $500 tag may or may not be a good tag and might only be a RO tag. Do some homework before you purchase.

I agree that you can often find tags on Graig's list and everything will be fine but I have heard of fake vouchers, I am not sure how to discern if it is real or not. You could check with Mark at the Archery Shoppe and see if he has any line on cow tags, at least you will know it is good. I've bought a couple different tags out of the newspaper and both turned out to be really crappy tags, I didn't get an elk either time and neither was a good experience. Unless I can trust the seller that it will be a good tag I will never buy another, I didn't draw a tag this year in NM and just decided to spend the money in Colorado and at least have a good experience.

yes craigslist are where many are sold and some unit wide. not sure how to dicern real or not. I'd probably only meet the seller face to face and see if they are real. I've seen cow tags as low as 300$ but expect to pay over 1K for bull tags plus you take the voucher and buy your tags and thats pricey for a non resident. Sometimes say a week or two before the prices will drop if a landowner finds himself still hold a voucher they want to sell.
