five calls for a tone deaf hunter?

I remember a similar thread but I cannot find it. I am tone deaf and really can't tell the difference between some calls. My strategy has been to learn a about 5 or 6 and do the best I can. These are the 5 I am practicing. I am told I need some work.

Nervous Grunt (easiest)
Location Bugle (sound a lot like bulls calling cows bugle to my tone deaf ear).
Bugle with grunts
Social Mew
Distressed cow sound (found this online)

Is there any I might consider adding or dropping? If so, please give an explanation.

Only thing I'd mention is that the location bugle is just a clean, one or 2 high note bugle - no aggression. A bull calling cows bugle is a short lip bawl scream with a high pitched pop on the end. Your location and BCC bugle shouldn't be sounding even remotely alike. Other than that, your list is more than adequate to get the job done.

Bummer being tone deaf but I like your attitude sir! Absolutely do your best to not only make the needed sounds but more importantly understand their meaning & use. Elk use specific sounds for specific reasons, we as hunters need to do the same to up our odds of success, this can equate into many "close encounters" coupled with patience.

In the new ElkNut 5 dvd I share the top five sounds elk will use from late Aug through Oct. These 5 sounds are all you need to hunt elk effectively as I show in the dvd, sure elk make more sounds but all you need to do is understand them not imitate those outside the needed 5. Elk hunters do not really need to know how to grunt or chuckle to be successful, these sounds should be ones to work on later after the other 5 are mastered & polished up, no need to overwhelm ones with too much to work on early in there hunting careers.

My top 5 are -- Location Bugle -- Advertising/Challenge Bugle -- Nervous Grunt -- Social Cow Talk & Excited Mews & Whines -- Estrus/Contact Buzz. Adding lively/realistic raking trees or brush with light stomping can be utilized in several of your setups as well, it's depending on the situation at hand!

You master these 5 & it's completely doable & you will see one, two or whatever can be used & tailored to fit any elk encounter with great success! Know their meanings & it will come easy to choose the right one at the right time! At the same time when you hear the elk using any of these you will now have some familiarity as to what the message is they are sending & now you can act accordingly!

Found this to be an interesting test. Never considered if I was tone deaf or not.
Advice I would give is skip the grunts. You don't necessarily need them. Have some one listen to your location bugle and get feed back on the aggressive part of the call. It is better, IMO, to hit the mid notes, but for you I would just try to keep it to where its not intense.
For an aggressive or challenge bugle, I would add your own emotion and intensity to the call. Add more air pressure and growl into the call. The elk will know the difference.

Thanks guys. I actually passed the test on the website 82%. I think I just got lucky when I had to guess.
