ishy, that is the kicker right there! I hunted the panhandle the last 4 years and those units never felt that crowded, but you generally aren't aware of other hunters during bow season unless you pass a truck. Between the perception of having the woods to yourself, and the abundance of elk, which you can hear all day long, but rarely see, it feels like a dream come true. I've studied harvest stats extensively for this state though, and statistically speaking, believe it or not, they have some of the worst odds. I'd put familiarity and experience up against odds and statistics any day though!

I loved hunting the panhandle, but moved to Boise this summer and have set my sights on 31 (Brownlee) this season, and am super excited at the prospect of actually being able to SEE the game I'm hunting!

I discussed this very topic with Phantom the other day. Because the Panhandle is mostly national forest (some state lands), and because the forest circus hasn't been seriously logging since the 1990's, the woods are really, really thick right now. Yes, there are elk. Yes, you can hear them. No, you probably can't see them. Therefore, you have to go in after them. That is my strategy for 2015. Report due later.

The Idaho panhandle is a great place for someone that plans on hunting the same erea every year.90% of the panhandle is public,so finding a spot is not a problem.
The problem is it is very thick,and it takes time to find hot spots,but if you commit to the same erea,and get to know it,your odds go up dramatically.
