There's elk in those woods !!

Postby barber111 » 07 28, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Went out to move more cameras. Came around a bend and could see something "blonde" wayyy over on yonder hill.. Elk or griz ?? Shut the 4 wheeler off and see it moving. Ohh here come some more moving downhill.. About 1,000yds away, but I can tell some are big and some are smaller. They are coming downhill at 6:30am !!! I thought they would be doing the opposite. Coming uphill to bed. (wrong).. I watched them for 20 mins. till they were clear. I was going right at them on my trail/road.. O.K. it's all clear, here I go now to continue with my plan. HOLY COW !! Puddles of piss everywhere on the dusty trail.. O.K... Just EASE thru here and all will be good..
HOLLY COW !!! They're still above me. (giving me that "big eared giraffe" look).. Shut the 4 wheeler off and watch.. 12 cows and calves just turned and walked back up the hill..
It was cool.. Listening to them talking to each other cows and calves.. They didn't freak out and storm out, which is good.. REAL GOOD..
Up till then I've just been seeing singles. (cows and spikes)
Got the cameras set further out where I wanted to.. Didn't do any looking where these were. Just wanted to act like a lost idiot instead of a hunter.. That "lost idiot" tactic comes natural to me..

Great morning in the elk woods..

Thanks, Barber

Well, sounds like you found some elk! (grin) Keeping tabs on them would be good! As a rule of thumb elk generally do bed high but nothing written stone there! We too run across the occasional group bedding lower than they feed & water. It's the norm in some areas.

sounds like a really cool experiance. I have plans to go camping and scouting the last 2 weekends of Aug to get ready for my early Sept hunt. I hope that i come across a few groups like that while scouting and hiking.
