44 days and counting and im a wreck !!

My very first NM elk hunt starts for me in a very long/short 44 days. I am doing it totally DIY. I have gone over the list of gear so amany times i think its embeded in memory. The wife has begun helping me plan meals and such. Im shooting my bow as much as i can weather permitting and practicing my calls as often as i can as well. If this were deer season i would be totally calm and not a bit worried, but i seem to be a total frazzaled wreck. Did everyone get this way when they started out? does it get better?? lol

Bad news - it does not get better, only worse! I am totally impressed that you are doing DIY - ultimate in satisfaction when you achieve success. Once you see how amazing Elk meat tastes, and get some in your face Bugling action, you will really be in rough shape next year.

nope, 5 years later...... and its just as bad. almost. there is something that comes experience and having done it a couple of times....

It will get easier! The anticipation may just get higher & greater but the preperation definitely gets easier. Good luck!

i have hunted mulies all my life and feel super confident about hunting them with either a rifloe or my bow. The elk world has been so intimidating for me. I havent gotten out as much as i would like to scout but i feel i have prepared fairly well with the scouting i have done and the help of others on here as well as freinds i have that have had success in the unit i am hunting.

Hey Mike, you will do great! All that preparation pays off. IMO DIY is the only way to go. Your always stronger when you are not dependent on someone else.

I agree with the above post it gets easier to prepare but the wwwwaaaaaiiiiitttttt may get worse!

What area will you be hunting?

I was lucky enought to draw Unit 34 for the first season Archery. My best friend drew same unit second season archery. so together we have the whole month of Sept to hunt should be have time off from work.

That's some good area...I've never hunted 34 but have spent some time there and hunted just north in 36. Good luck to you guys.
