been practicing the delorme at home.. works great!. I'm hunting solo this fall and I just needed something to call in the Cavalry if need be.. or at least let my wife know I'm ok..

Used a Delorme last year and loved it. Great on batteries, pre set or full length text messages, passive position tracking and an emergency button. If I had a sat phone I would've ended up spending more time on it, using more time and batteries.

Personally I feel the Delorme is better in an emergency situation...

I used the inreach last year as well and it worked great. And a lot cheaper. The only thing I don't like is that I can't send pics.

Satellite Phone is the Cadillac. Most effective, most convenient, most expensive. Renting on for a couple weeks is not bad however. The iridium satellite system is much more reliable in my experience that the Globalstar system. The inReach device works on the iridium system (Spot works on globalstar), and allows you to sent SOS and text messaging. Still some expense with inReach. I would look into renting an iridium Satellite phone.

I think the inreach was like $60 for unlimited messages and you can just shut it off after the hunt. And fire it back up next year. The cool thing is it tracks you the whole time. You can send your info to someone and they can log on and watch where you go every day from a home computer. One other thing that I would say is a con is that you have 2 devices to keep charged. Thats hard for one solar charger to keep up with. Me and my hunting partner both had one last year and only one solar and one battery cell. We had some dead time. But if you look at the pros it's a gps, a life line and if your partner has one a walkie talkie. For a third of the price of a sat phone on the first year and $60 a year after that.
