Idaho Unit 44 Elk

Postby excaliber » 06 25, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I finally drew an Elk tag here after 10 years of trying.
I was lucky to draw the early hunt in Unit 44 (Sept 25-Oct 10th) I have been never been in 44 but plan to spend quite a bit of time in there scouting.

I was wondering if anyone has been in there since it burned? Has anyone here hunted this unit? This might be a good hunt to have that Wolf tag handy.

Any ideas on where to start looking for some Bulls in this unit?

I know this unit is likely not what it was pre Wolf as the harvest numbers are really down since the were introduced. I've never killed a Bull and hope this will be a good hunt to get that accomplished. This will likely be my one and only chance at hunting this unit. Any info you'd be willing to share would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Those are great dates to elk hunt! I've not hunted that unit but hunt plenty of units with wolves in them. Don't be too concerned about them, get out there & scout it like you intend to. Talk with the game biologist & various Taxidermy shops in the area, these folks may be able to shed some insight on areas to consider your scouting. It will be a good hunt none the less! Good Luck!

Just a small pack of wolves in 44. I've only ever seen them in there in Winter. Buy yourself a wolf tag and then forget about it. Most likely won't be a factor in your hunt. 44 is easy to scout. Most of what burned the last few years was winter range and hurt the deer popularion much more than the elk. You wont be hunting elk that low anyway. Atv or motorcycle is your best bet as there are lots of roads but they're Nasty. The biggest challenge for that tag is working around all the private property. Landowners in that unit are militant about trespassers. F+G can give you some good info as well. Good luck !

A resident wolf tag is only 11.50 or 31.75 or swap your non resident deer or elk tag
