Strange Question

I am thinking i want to add some glow in the dark paracord to my pack. Do you think animals (bears) would be deterred by glow in the dark strings? Thinking of hanging meat and the glow potentially keeping them away. (also the tent) Bears have pretty poor eyesight so i am not sure if this would help.

For one you should have the elk meat up high enough where a bear can't get to it. They don't usually mess with the opposite end tied to the tree to hold the meat. Secondly most glow in the dark items don't last all night. I don't see that it would be a problem. I don't think this will keep bears away by any means. Where did you get it at?

Amazon is one place that sells it. I was also thinking it would be good to use it in general though. My buddy Elijah Craig was giving me ideas last night.

If you liked the rope for its materials & strength that's one thing but to purchase it as a bear deterrent that's pretty far fetched. (grin) If hanging meat is within a bears reach & they want it they'll get it, period! Buy rope for its quality, lightweight & strength.

Seems that the rope would be in essence a neon sign in the woods saying "look here!" I think it would be the wrong material to use to not attract attention. The glow 1/4 inch rope I get at harbor freight only glows a short while. Couple hours tops.

Bears are pretty curios and have a great nose, so if they had the scent and got a visual of their illuminate prize I imagine it would do more to attract them, as opposed to deterring them….

how long does that stuff glow anyways, before you need to "Charge" it again with a blast of light?

i imagine after 30 minutes in the dark it will just be regular paracord anyways. one thing it would be cool, is tarp set up in the dark. might make it easier.

That stuff might be good for tent ties. There's always that one tent tie on the corner you always trip over at night.

Really I was thinking there were other main uses for it. Like a lanyard for your flashlight or knife and tie offs for the tent/tarp. Was just wondering if it would help for the bears. Just figured if I need paracord may as well find another use for it. But I agree, I don't really see it scaring them off.

As far as keeping the bears away goes, this has worked for me, and I have never had a bear get to my meat, boned out or otherwise. If I have bagged the boned out meat, I move it away from the rest of the carcass, drinking lots of water, I pee in a circle around the meat, hang a sweaty, human smelly, shirt above the meat, and hang my spare headlamp above, and leave it turned on all night. Here in Northern California, we have a HUGE bear population, an old timer taught me this, and I have never lost any meat since I started doing this.

i found the best way to keep bears away is to have a bear tag.

you never see them!! tag-less? you'll see one everyday.

I have heard of using glow sticks to light a trail to the kill site for packing out an animal. Last year we got so turned around in the dark it was rediculous. This might work for that and cheaper, just shine your light around and click it off and follow the markers once they get a charge.

I agree with twinkieman on this,"marking the meat as yours" will give any critter second thoughts on eating your meat, especially if they have an "unmarked" delicious gut pile to eat instead of getting close to human stink. A sweaty bandana,shirt, hat etc. over the meat,and going #1 or better yet..... if you have to #2 works even better. Animals respect this,and I have never had any meat taken when doing this.

As far as finding camp with lighted rope......well.....

Just mark "camp" on your GPS,should get you within 6' of it, even if you are miles away,...in the dark.

I use the reflector or glow cord for tent rope. You wouldn't believe how many times it will save your neck.

+1 for the above peeing and keeping the carcass separated from the meat are keys after #1 just get it out quickly. Bears live and die by their nose.
