Elk Hunting Maps

Postby StartMyHunt » 06 25, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I am a new sponsor to ElkNut and wanted to take the opportunity to describe a few of the features you can find on my maps. My maps are are intended to point you in the right direction and show you areas where you should be concentrating your efforts during your scouting and hunting trips. These maps are especially helpful if you are hunting a new unit and do not have the time to scout out an area prior to hunting. I realize that many other factors (hunting pressure trumps all) must be considered to have a successful hunt, but at least you will have some ideas on which direction to head out once you leave camp. The following features can be found in most of the GMUs west of I-25 on my maps.

1. Hot Spots--See link below for the units where these have been identified.

2. Security/Bedding Areas

3. Primary Forage Areas

4. Secondary Forage Areas

5. Migration Routes

6. USFS Road Status

7. Land Ownership (Public vs. Private)

8. Seasonal Elk Ranges (Summer Concentration and Wintering Areas)

The first four features on the list are derived from the vegetation on the ground and based upon classifications taken from satellite imagery. I use the vegetation to define areas where exceptional elk habitat is located. By locating these areas, you will be hunting in areas that have the three things elk need to survive--Forage, Cover, and Water.
Good Luck,

Did I mention my maps are fully customizable? What that means is that you tell me the area you plan to hunt and I will make your map at any scale, meaning I can zoom in or out on your camp or you give me a location and we can go from there and make a map to suit your purposes.
Good Luck,
