What socks

I'm trying to piece together equipment to start elk hunting and am getting down to sock choice and was hoping for some experienced help. I am looking to keep my feet COOL and DRY while covering a lot of ground in the mountains. I know how much of a challenge finding that combination that can be, so, what do you guys recommend?

Im a fan of merino wool. From socks to baselayers. Seems to work well for me.

Merino wool. I buy a lot of Lorpen brand because they are always super cheap at Sierra Trading Post.

from a lot of trial and error what ive found works best for me is straight merino wool blend darn tough socks occassionally ill wear a bridgdale liner. but what works for one doesnt always work for all

I prefer Darn Tough but also use the merino wool socks from Costco.

I like my "Ingenius" by Cabelas. but I think they must be going away, hard to find.

I second Friday's post. Can't go wrong with these socks. I have tried several different brands and these have been the best by far. Merino wool is what you need to look for.

I also agree on the ingenius socks, just picked up another pair at the local cabelas.The new ones seem to have an even better fit.I always wear a "liner sock" with any sock,this will help with blistering, as sock and sock will rub,not sock on skin.

I have tried a bunch and it is hard to beat Smartwool. Occasionally I will wear a thin, wicking synthetic underneath the merino wool. Most of the time I have no problems with blisters so I just go with the Smartwool. For my elk hunts, I may throw the thin synthetic in my pack. Serves two things for me. If I get a hot spot, I put those one. If for some reason I get cold feet, I can put those on.

i wear wool socks from Point6. i had ZERO idea about wool when i got them. they are blue and obnoxious looking. just bought them on a whim. no issues at all. i also have a 100% merino pair from Danner. i think they are..well, they tend to stink more than the rest. not bad, just "more"

i think i need a thinner one. my feet are getting healthier, and the skin is tougher. i dont need such a cushy sock. there is no better feeling on my feet than when i put on a thin runners sock. i sometimes use them in my boots and it just feels awesome. zero bunchiness...and my feet just feel (what's the word?).....geez..more agile, athletic..i cant describe it. they just hug and compress a bit. i should probably experiment. but my sport socks DRYMAX, running socks are amazingly comfy. i bet my feet would stink to high heaven after a long week. hahah.

Hands down, no question for me, Smartwool. I use their medium sock in either the hike, or hunt socks. Why does a Sasquatch need socks though?

If dryness is your goal, first you need a layer against your skin that wicks moisture away. Definitely NOT cotton. Synthetics are best from what I read. Wool is ok, but not as aggressive at wicking away from the skin, and then letting it go to evaporation. Summer or winter, I always use a synthetic base layer sock, then a wool sock. Then, you need ventilation, which is only partly a sock function, but more a function of the footwear. Some boots are promoted as increasing ventilation to provide for drying. I have no experience with such. But the best socks in the world are of little worth for keeping feet dry if the moisture cannot be released outside of the boot.

Also for the Ingenious sock. Although I have the green heavyweight versions for cold weather. Nicely designed sock.

My feet sweat profusely so I wear Drymax socks for wicking and cotton over them. I sleep with my feet outside the covers and the sliding door open in the winter at home.
