106 miles in 24 hours...on foot.

Postby Raghorn_Reaper » 06 14, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Cameron Hanes is a freak. He ran 106 miles in 24 hours. More than just the physical aspect, he dominates his mental game. That is such a big part of it. Guys like him really push the human body to its limits. I think it's inspiring...I need to kick it up a notch or 10.

Yes, I see him as an inspiration as well. Yes, he takes things to an extreme but still very impressive! Aron Snyder who's associated with Kifaru is not as crazy but is one that also inspires guys like myself, I love their attitude & work ethic!

Saw that on facebook, I think 8 people accomplished 100 miles plus in the 24 hrs, and 2 were woman. I run regularly and have never run that much in a week!

I'm happy when I run 35 miles in a week. I couldn't image running 106 miles in 24hrs. The winner ran 127 miles. That is insane.

I see they are having one of these ruck challenges up here in milwaukee but sadly I don't think I am quite ready. Getting closer though. That looks like an awesome event though.

Guy is an animal. The mind always quits before the body does. There are a select few that can take that to extremes. Definitely an inspiration. Keep hammering.

Pretty amazing and inspiring, I don't have that much time to devote to fitness, but it definitely pushes me to go a little harder!

that ruck challenge is intriguing... 10-12 hours!
106 miles in 24 hours equal 4.4 miles an hours..... my average 10k is 57 minutes. my 1/2 marathon 3 weeks ago was 2.07 hours or roughly 6.5 miles an hour, I was spent. now throw in 106 miles.....

met some gal that had to weigh over 210 lbs. running the Pocatello Ultra. She only had a couple miles left

The husband of a friend of my wife is some sort of Mountain runner. Making his living selling the clothes he wears running He completed 6 or 7 of the peaks in the Lost river Range including Mt Borah in 24 hours.
Some guys have that mental and physical stamina. I dont think I could stay away 24 hours :?

I tip my cap to Cam. He has his haters, but I am not one of them. (I had to promise my family I would never train/run a 100 miler, so I am out!) But Cam inspired me to change my approach to fitness. I started running in 2007, running my first marathon in 2008.

Somewhere around 2008, I read about Cam and tackling his first 50K. (Bighorn, Wyoming). The challenge, the view, the odyssey, I knew I wanted to run this race. In 2009, it was my first ultra. It was humbling! But I returned in 2010 and 2011 bettering my performance in each race. In 2011, I also ran Boston marathon ala Cam Hanes. (See pic)

I am still at it, running my first 50M at BH in 2014.

This flatlander offers a huge thanks for blazing the trail. He continues to inspire folks, even if many of us don't broadcast it. You have shown that hunters aren't necessarily the stereotypical overweight beer drinking bubbas that seem to populate video media.

I wouldn't even care to do anything of the sort altho it may be inspiring. The damage to your body from that is horrendous! Not even feasible for someone sane imo. Having said that, are they bad a$s? Yes they are!!

i know a guy that does ultramarathons.

i think he is mental. i think he ran 150 miles once, only stopping to take naps. he told me his body starts digesting muscle mass to fuel the system after a short while and he loses something like 35 lbs. he isnt built up like Cam. my buddy is a bit of a waif. really lean.

he did this training thing once..i forget what he called it. where he stands all the time. ALL THE TIME. he only lays down to sleep. every waking hour is on his feet. he used a tall desk to work at his computer, ate standing..pooped squating. never sat down.

he ran Mt whitney once. hahah..

i'd die. this guy doesnt hunt. thank goodness, he would crush me as a bowhunter.

I might get flamed for this, but it's my opinion. While impressive, I think it is totally unnecessary and extreme to think someone has to get to this level of fitness to kill an elk. I am 30 years old, 6' tall, 160 pounds and go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I feel this is more than sufficient. How many guys kill elk less than a mile from a road? Honestly, I think this guy just wants to prove to everybody else that he is a superior hunter over other people. I suppose he also took photos along the way with all of the products he endorses as well.

WYO_ELK: I don't think you'll get flamed, Nobody was saying it's necessary to run over 100 miles in 24 hours to prepare for elk hunting. Just look at all the posts about how some think it's crazy that he did that, and some say they couldn't do that, And I know I sure couldn't! I thought it was interesting, also I never knew someone could run that far in that short of time :o . It may be inspiring to some people, and give them the drive to go the extra mile, or at least next ridge or valley ;) ... I think that what he did is jaw dropping-ly impressive! But it can't be good for ones body and health, but what do I know? Your'e right it's not necessary to be that extreme to kill an elk. But it would pretty darn cool if he said 'race ya to the next state'!

Here's the thing - Cam Hanes has gone on record agreeing with what you wrote. (Other than the prove to everyone else part - I think he'd disagree with that). Something to the affect of - "You don't have to do what I do, I do it because I want to..." That's part of why I like the guy - works a normal job like the rest of us, has turned a passion into an additional career, and while he's crazy over the top with the fitness side of things - it is inspiring to a lot of people.

He says he does all his work to be the "Ultimate Predator" - while I don't think you can ever be in too good shape for mountain hunting - I do think he's just as addicted to the fitness side of things as the bowhunting side.

His book is worth a read too.
