How Many Years Have You Waited?

Postby ElkNut1 » 06 03, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I just put in for an Idaho Elk Draw, this is my 11th year to draw an elk tag, nothing yet? Hopefully this will be my year? (grin) I love the unit I applied for so we'll see!

How about you, how long have you been awaiting your special draw?

Five years for elk here in Nevada. I have 5 sheep points and 3 deer points. 3 more years before I can apply for Antelope.

Building points in WY, AZ and UT as well

Put in the draw for ID. Will do a general if we don't draw.

This whole draw system is a lot of work.

I drew my Nevada bull tag this year with 4 points. This is the first year in the past 4 that I haven't drawn a deer tag. I have 4 black bear points and 4 sheep points. 3 deer points in Wyoming and 5 deer points in Arizona. Lots to keep up with.....

Seven years for an area 76 ML bull tag in Colorado. I didnt get it, there were 33 people with 7 PP and only 2 tags... Next year should be my year. Maybe i should wait a few more years and go to another unit...

I drew it the first time applying a couple years ago and drew it again this year. Very very lucky to draw such a coveted unit.

It has been 18 yrs for elk. I have drawn 2 good buck tags with the last one in 2010. I drew last year on a poor hunt but the odds were 78% so I was hoping my luck wasn't that bad.
As for the elk I go after some of the harder to draw units. Every year I am happy putting in knowing I have the same odds as the other guys. And if I don't draw I go OTC and have a blast. Gotta love Idaho.

B-Rad,
I blew my points and hunted 76 a few years back. Fun unit to hunt. Have you figured out your plan yet?

Since moving here to Idaho 5 years ago I have drawn twice for elk, but not at all for deer. But I try to put in for units that have 20% or better odds of drawing.

Put in for hard to draw areas where I apply and other states. Building points while finding others areas and ways to hunt. Going on 4 years for a rifle deer tag in ND but I always manage to go in for the second drawing and get a whitetail doe. That and I always have archery tags for Montana and ND. I have 3 points in Montana and 4 in Wyoming for elk. The wait hasnt been to long.

Tigger,
I don't have a definite plan ,at this point. I have a few ideas, that might pan out. I have a friend who will be confirming some things,on a trip to the area, later this month. What season did you hunt?

It has been 14 years for my archery tag in Colorado for Unit 61 and I had 12 points now I have 13. So I hope that the wait will be over next year?
I am beginning to wonder if I should put in for Unit 76 archery tag. Good luck to you all that were able to draw this year. Can't wait to see the pictures.

Here in Nevada, I got a bull elk tag 7 years ago (after waiting 9 years to get it). I now have to wait 3 more years to even apply for another bull elk tag (there is a 10 year waiting period if you're successful, 5 years if you're not). Figure I'll be 75-80 years old before I draw another one
I've gotten cow elk tags last year and again this year, but haven't had a deer tag in 3 years. Got an antelope tag last year, and now have to wait 5 years before I can apply again.

14 years for Utah. I'm there in all but the top three or four units for archery. Trying to decide if I can pull it off in the next couple years why my dad is still a little mobile. And if you read foxvalleys post I need my wife to fully grasp what a once in a lifetime tag means so I can give that tag it's due dilegence.

11 years in Arizona, Nevada, and have max points available here in Calif., and haven't even been able to draw a mule deer tag. Fingers crossed again this year, but I don't have much hope. To those who have pulled a tag in the past or this year I say, congrats!

First year putting in for CO was this year. Knew I couldn't hunt but got my 1st PP anyways. Will probably burn it next year though to make sure I get the Unit we are going to.

Been waiting my whole life though and will finally be my first trip next year. DIY Public Land. Aught to be fun.

okay..i'm not that bitter. i actually love the rush of putting in for a tag..and the wait.

i drew a tag in 2007 in NM. never again. it's like i ran the NM governor's dog over or something. she hates me.

I have 9 mule deer points for Co. 4 Elk points for Co, thinking about burning the elk points next year for Unit 77-78, 771 is that good or bad what other unit would be better for that many points.

I just drew the Unit 44 Elk hunt in my 10th year of trying to draw a tag. This is the first year I've drawn any tags at all in this state and I was able to get two and the unlimited deer tag also. I can't believe I drew this tag.

For those hunting in CO and that drew a tag after years of waiting, maybe you would like to try pre-scouting your area? My maps can help depending on the unit (see the link below to see if I have any "Hot Spots"). For those that did not draw this year, keep on trying. Another option--you can always go OTC. I have always hunted OTC units and have had good success.

Too many... 11PP for elk in Colorado and 9 PP for deer in Colorado. Hoping for a unit 61 elk hunt if I can hold off for another 15 years :)

I finally got my Unit 61 archery elk tag for 2016 season. Just wanted to see if anyone else had been lucky enough to draw Unit 61 in Colorado that is hunting solo?
Also if there is anyone that can give me any pointers on this unit it would be greatly appreciated.
Going scouting this weekend and hopefully many weekends to come. This will be my only time for this exciting hunt.
Again anyone that would enjoy chatting about this Unit PM me and we can talk.

I waited 21yearsfor a trophy elk area in Colorado, and 16 years for a moose tag. After 20 years of trying for my 2nd Big Horn Sheep tag,I gave up and the same for Mountain Goat which was 26 years.I got too old to do those two hunts.

Now,I do not collect preference points anymore.I put in for ML cow tags every year and them and then buy a OTC bull elk tag for the rifle season.

I'd rather hunt a bald elk every year rather than sitting on the couch for two years thinking about hunting a bull.Plus at mt age,I never know if I will be physically able to hunt elk next year

I've only been elk hunting about 10 years and didn't get to hunt every year. But I wish I would have started back then putting in for a trophy unit. On the other hand I just about melt down waiting every other year for a ML tag. I would probably die waiting for 15 years for 76.

I have 7 points for elk now. It will be awhile before I get a good archery hunt. I drew a great deer tag this year, so I am back to the one geezer deer point they give automatically to the elderly.

I have little to add but do have one question. Seems like an appropriate place.

What is Colorado going to do about the point creep in some of the harder to draw units?
