Wall Tent ?

Hello.
My wife and I are going to buy a wall tent for gear, etc. we want a 12 by 14 with floor but are considering a 10 by 12 with floor. Reason being every day we get a little older and injuries don't heal as fast.
What is your all opinions of difficulty setting up one size vs the other?

My first question is do you mean a sewn in floor as in a permanent part of the tent? I would NOT recommend that. It makes the tent heavier, bulkier, harder to set up, and harder to dry. A removable floor can be set in after the tent is up, replaced or repaired easily, and easily cleaned. For floors I would suggest the mesh tarps from Harbor Freight.

As far as set up goes there's not much difference in those 2 sizes. But a 12 by 14 is quite a bit more tent once it's set up. If you are the type to bring the kitchen sink I'd go with that. Plus it gives you the option to have a guest or two. The 10 by 12 is a two person tent for all practical purposes. A 3rd can sleep in there but it's tight and you have to fold up the cot when it's not being used.

For space, yup kitchen sink and deep freezer. Also my wife is a neat freak. Every thing is organized down to the water jugs and Capt bottles. We have supplies to last three + weeks.

10 by 12. In front of the cot on the left there is just enough room for the wood stove. with a 12 foot side wall there is not enough room for 2 cots along the right wall. You could move the table to the front right corner and put a 3rd cot up the middle though. But you wouldn't have much room for gear and food storage.

Dave, I hear ya sir, those comforts in a wall tent are very nice to have! Add a woodstove for heat & comfort & they can't be beat!(grin) My son & I use a 12X14 with a floor, nice thing about that size it it can handle one or two more if the need arises, we like that at times or it just gives us more room! (grin) A 12X14 doesn't take anymore time to setup than a 12X14 does so both do well.

I have 2 wall tents. A smaller 10x10 for when it's just me and another person and a big 12x20 for when there are more of us. The small tent does not have a floor and the larger one does. Both have their pros and cons. The small tent is easy and quick to set up, not to mention that we don't have to gather nearly as much wood to keep it warm haha. The bigger tent takes 2 people about 45 minutes to setup. It is very nice when setup, but large and takes up a lot of space. And it takes a lot of wood to heat it up to about 50*.

Whatever you decide, I would recommend going and looking at a few that are setup and see what works best for you. Take measurements of everything you are going to have in there and see how much room you have. I highly suggest a wood stove. They are night and day difference when you don't have one in the tent.

Those center post and eave post tents are a royal pain in the arse to set up. One man cannot do it. I had one and hated it. A single person can set up any size wall tent with an internal frame... although they do weigh more. But I believe we are talking roadside camp here. Internal frames support more snow too if you gun hunt.

One pro of smaller is it's easier to find a place to set it up. Bigger tents require a larger flat treeless area. But thats no big factor between a 10/12 and a 14/16. Not much anyway. But more than once I've had a 10 by 12 in places where it barely fit between the trees.

Going to have to disagree with IS although mine WT may not be exactly what he had. I have a 14x16 wall tent from Davis Tent in Colorado. It has the interior posts (1 center, 2 end) and outside wall posts and not the internal frame. One man, me, and I am no spring chicken, can set it up entirely in 30 minutes, minus the floor. Actually, a kid could do it with a little finger pointing. It is so simple and if your canvas shrinks a bit because you took it down wet and then dried it, it will go up, stretch a bit after some hours and you just tighten it some more. BTW, for a floor I use 1)a sheet of plastic. 2) cheap Harbor Freight tarp. 3) cheap indoor/outdoor carpet (tan) and leave the wood stove area as dirt. Anyway, I feel mine is easier than the internal frames to set back up. I use a wood stove for November hunts. Use a 2 burner gas over the propane bottle for desert mule deer down to about 18 degrees. For September elk, more clothing. Also, being 14x16, just the weight of the tent canvas is a lot so you may want to consider that also. Lots of combinations available. Happy camping and hunting.

To each his own I guess. I'd like to see a video of you setting that contraption up. I had a Colorado tent, which was pretty nice, and I sold it after a few seasons because I hated that system.

Also... a HUGE bonus of internal frames is you have TONS of places to hang everything from clothes to backpacks etc. Love that.

Setup got a lot easier when I decided to build the roof and sides of the frame, add wall legs on one side, and drape the canvas over that without reaching overhead. Next I lift up the side w no legs, canvas and all, and attach the 3 legs. 10/12 is easy for 1 guy w bad shoulders, 12/14 would not be much harder. My floor is just a poly tarp w edges folded under, and a carpet scrap over that. I dig a trench around the sides and back so moisture runs away from the tent walls and floor. If I were putting a 3rd cot in mine, it would go along the back wall and the heater would move to one side by the door. My rain tarp hangs over the front by 6 ft, for cooking, shade and storage.
