Elk Calf Rescue

The wife and I took her Mom and Dad for a river boat ride last night and came across a stranded elk calf.

The poor little guy had fallen down an 8-10 foot embankment and Momma was on top mewing for him but there was no way up !!

So we nosed the jet boat into the bank and hopped out with the boat idled up so it would stay as the water was very fast. The little guy must have knew we were there to help as he just stood there and crawled up the bank as far as he could and we just gave him a quick little boost up and mom was there waiting and she whisked him away !! It was all so amazing !!

I had the Go Pro in the boat and could have got it all on camera but I was caught up in the moment and never turned it on !! But my wife did get a photo when he was curled up near the water at the base of the bank. I'll get it post for you guys asap !

We were a little worried about touching him as I was scared the mother would smell our scent and leave him but she took to him so fast after the boost up that was a non issue. We had to try as he would have either starved there or got swept down river into the white water and drown and there was no way I was letting that happen !!

What? But I thought us hunters were killing everything we could and destroying the wildlife populations ! Yep that's crazy. Good job dude, that was even worth forgetting about filming it, I'm glad you noticed him, apparently they are supposed to blend in very well . Thanks for conserving part of the elk population.

Yes they do blend in very well !! In fact as we went past the cow on the bank I never even saw the calf. We went up river and floated back so the wife's mom and dad could see her closer and that is when we herd the cow and calf talking. The calf was really loud and sharp calling out to mom.

I thought something was weird as elk don't usually just stand there as we go past in a river boat.. The whole thing was just weird ! We were just glad to help out !!

A cool experience

I tried the same thing with a moo cow calf while I was beaver trapping. Only the calf didnt care for my help. I finally was beat up enough I walked to the farm house and left a note.
The next day I could see were the calf was pulled up the bank by a rope attached to a tractor.

Travis, your a regular old grizzly Adams, First shaking hands with a grizzly while checking trail cameras, and now saving a elk calf. Did you name him Ben? What next.... are you gonna hold your arm out and a hawk well land. Who needs a drone when you have a hawk.

LOL Ya I guess it goes with living close to the mountains where all the animals strut around !! Funny you mentioned a hawk as my cousin and I nursed a Red Tailed Hawk after it got hit by a car when I was young !! I really just played with it and my cousin did all the work !! But still !! LOL

Funny when you get out in the bush how things just happen. You never know what is around the bend !!

Oh on the Grizzly it turned out there was a bear bait 200 yards from my cameras !!!! Surprise !!!!

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago on the 4th of July. We were on a back road and came up on a fawn trying to get across a cattle guard. The deer fell through the bars and got stuck underneath. My friend laid on the cattle guard and reached down and grabbed the fawn. He passed it up to me and I turned it loose on the other side. Never did see momma.
