4 or 3 vanes? is loss of FPS and FOC worth it?

I just bought a new PSE Full Throttle 70# @29.5. and I'm going to use Gold Tip Velocity 300 arrows. The computer tells me that with a 100gr BH and three Blazer vanes I should be around 342 fps and a 11.3% FOC. But I have decided to go with VaneTechs stiff spine vanes 3.00" long with a 3 degree right hand helix. They should preform better then the Blazers but I don't have any numbers yet. would it be a good idea to go 3 or 4 vanes?

A Friend shots four vanes and he told me you lose speed but gain better long range broad-head flight, and nocking arrow is faster.(you don't need to look at arrow to have color up). I trust his advise just looking for more incite on this....... anyone play the vane game?

I always use 3 fletch, but don't shoot any where near the speed that you do. You might want to look at the front end of the arrow first, maybe a 125 grain bh would serve you better, a little more FOC should help with arrow flight. That would probably reduce your speed by 7-8 FPS. You can always experiment with vane configurations after you have settled on your bh.

What broadhead are you planning to use? At 342 FPS, I think that tuning is going to be crucial. I wouldn't worry about gaining a little speed in nocking your arrow with 4 fletch, better to fletch for a good tune. Tuning at this speed is going to be a challenge IMO, depending of course on your bh. You have more than enough horsepower with your bow. Personally, I would give more thought to adding a little arrow weight, that would slow the arrow down, and make tuning a little easier, and shoot a big bh.

After all, it is the broadhead that kills. With your bow you can shoot a pretty big bh. If you are shooting mechanicals, then that makes a difference as far as tuning goes.

I shoot 4 fletch. I don't shoot any different with 3. It is personal preference. I like not having to set a cock vane. 342fps? You might want to put a parachute on the back of your arrow! It will probably chrono at more like 310 but either way it is more than fast enough and loss of speed should be your last concern. I'd probably shoot 4 fletch feathers with 342fps you get that. The drag will be your friend. Either that or dial it down some. When it comes to accuracy/BH tuning, speed is the enemy. Not one world record or title has been broken or set with one of these speed bows. Food for thought

You know my opinion, ive told you at work. I run a 4 fletch for a couple of reasons. Easy to nock, alows for a larger broadhead with a good foc and spine

Well I have to say that you PSE shooters can be full of yourselves at times you choose questionable people to hang out with. He gave you bad advice on your choice of bow.......

I personally run a 3 fletch, but I've spoken to Dee Wilde several times about his 4 fletch configuration and how well it stabilizes the arrow, especially big, heavy ones. Given that he is one of the greatest archers to ever live, I'd be pretty inclined to take his word for it

I would think that JJ has to use "6 vanes" on that 150 pound bow of his . I use four fletch for many of the reasons mentioned above (no cock vane to identify when nocking an arrow; seem to fly better/stabilize arrow). I shot fingers with my wheel bows until around four years ago. The four fletch really seemed to help stabilize the BH tipped arrow flight with any borderline bad release while shooting fingers. I started with three fletch when I bought my new Alpine and first ever mechanical release (again, about four years ago) and after one season, switched back to four fletch. They do seem to stabilize my BH tipped arrows better, particular at longer distances (50-60 yards is a long distance for me). Just my add on .02.

I shoot the same shaft. Super durable. I asked jerry at south shore about doing four vanes. He said to try three first. I tuned my bow and the thing shoots well. I never opted to mess with it again.

I do like the no cock vane thing.

Oh. I shoot the FFP 360 3" vanes.
