garmin gps

Postby atskuv » 05 03, 2015 •  [Post 1]

I'm looking to purchase a new gps for hiking and a future elk hunt. I would prefer to stick with the Garmin line I unhappy with my present Magellan explorer 210. I'm looking at a used like new Garmin 450 Oregon for $150 or a like new Garmin 650 for $300. I'd like to know your opinions and experiences with each or maybe one I haven't considered, on which is the better unit and best suits my needs considering the cost to performance ratio and reliability .

I know nothing about the Oregon but I love my Montana 650.

On the thread about multi tools I said I buy the cheapest I can because they never last and I see them as a throw away item. A GPS is the exact opposite. Buy the best you can afford.

I have the Oregon 450T and highly recommend it. Gives you a base topo and you can upload 24k maps for your area. Touch screen is awesome, screen is big enough to easily see the map, no too big to carry, with lithium batteries on power save it will last 3 days of continuous use. I tend to follow elk sign without paying a whole lot of attention of where I am and it has gotten me back on several 5+ mile cross country hike outs in the dark. It's also easy to scout likely areas on the map on your computer and download way points to the handheld.
