my sons first elk

Sorry guys and gals, I said id post this around Christmas time but life is hectic.

heres the story,

we woke up late, neither of us were feeling very well. we decided to head up the mountain anyways to see if we could catch a bedded elk like I did the weekend for or perhaps catch one still up on its feet. we hiked in about 1 mile and the time was around 10:00 am. as we dropped our packs and jackets due to the temps coming up. while we are doing this we hear an elk bugle from below us. we scramble to get into position. I get behind him to call. I cow call to this bull and all of a sudden his cows light up. calling very excitedly and that bull bugles again but a different bigger sounding bull bugles. so i decided to make myself sound like a herd myself. i used almost every call i have in my bag of tricks. all of a sudden a 5pt bull comes in from behind my son. the elk are circling around us some what. the bull doesn't see what hes looking for and turn and leaves, leaving with a bugle as he walks off. we still have the other bull on the other side of the draw but now the cows are moving in between us and the bull. i tell Cameron to turn around and move to a better shooting lane. hes kneeling down and i managed to pull 5 cows away from the herd. the cows are looking at me i have my face down not looking at them and Cameron still doesn't have a shot, im still calling, in between calls i tell Cameron 30 yds, he looks at me with a frustrated look. i cow call a liitle and tell him to stand and move for a shot. he slowly stands and the cows heads look right at him, i didn't hesitate i ripped off a bugle and the cows look at me Cameron takes half a step to his right, draws and drills the lead cow in the group. i heard the arrow connect and Cameron exploded with excitement. he said i hit her right in the >. we sat there and talked, hug and high fived each other for about 10 min. finally we started to track the elk. i found where the cow was when he took the shot, there was good blood right from the start. 20 yards later we find his arrow covered in blood with roughly 3" missing including his broadhead, 20yds after that we found her. what an awesome hunt. one im sure neither of us will forget anytime soon.

I got to hunt with Jeremy and Cameron a couple years ago. The brief time I had Cameron with me, I could notice he felt right at home in the elkwoods. Congrats on a great hunt. There is just something Special about being with your son when he gets his first elk. What a great day and great memories. My son got his 1st one this year as well and although he got it with a rifle it was one of my favorite hunts and elk hunting memories of all time. Here is wishing you both many more great hunts.
