What's in your Pack? - #1

Thought it would be interesting/educational to run a few of these. Let's start with a day pack hunt configuration first (we'll jump into spike hunts, extended backcountry hunts, etc., in subsequent threads).

What do you use for your day hunting pack, what do you carry in it, and what is the approximate weight?

Here's mine:

Pack - Eberlestock Blue Widow with top storage compartment.
Attached to pack belt - GPS, rangefinder, small equipment pouch (mini camera, xtra batteries for GPS, calls), hand cannon if in grizz country.
What's inside?
Hydration: Eberlestock 3 liter water bladder (2/3's full).
First Aid/Survival: Large/small bandages, white tape, quick clot, ace bandage, antisceptic wipes, ibuprofen, strong pain pills X 4, pitch sticks/lighter, emergency blanket, two chemlights, 7.5 MIN maps, compass.
Game care: Two knives (fixed blade Gerber and Havalon Piranta), rubber gloves, chili powder, game bags X 4
Other items in pack: 100' paracord, day's snack pack in quart zip lock, primary headlamp and backup w/xtra batteries, license/tags, two large plastic sacks (stream crossing leggings and to line pack when loaded with meat bags), flagging ribbon/trail tacks, xtra calls, bug spray (if in bad bug area), rain gear (if needed), lightweight jacket or vest.

Total pack weight is probably around 18 pounds (the BW is a heavy sucker).

Other items carried (not in pack): Bow, release, tube, calls, multi-tool, two-way radio (hunt dependent), compact binos/bino harness, facemask, TP.

Pretty darn good list! One thing I know that I add is chapstick. Water purifying method as well if I feel I might need water. Depending on the weather and conditions, I might put in gloves, neck warmer, stocking hat, gaiters or even extra socks (not pink ones though).

I assume the chili powder is to put on the meat to keep the bugs off or do you really make chili with it out there once you shoot your bull?

I have a Camelback pack that I don't think is very heavy, but when I put my stuff in it, I am closer to 25 pounds I believe. Now you got me thinking.....!

Ill start with my pockets
wind indicator, extra calls, sterile vacuum sealed gloves, face mask, range finder, maybe a neck gaitor
binos, sometimes a head lamp or small light

I forget the brand of my pack,
Bugle, knife license, license wire
Lots of water, a can of Mt Dew a couple fruit juices, a granola bar, sometimes more food, apple, sandwich, fruit chews
first aid kit: small bandages,vet wrap, 4x4 gauze, quick clot, antiseptic wipes, aspirin, tums, tweezers, 8 oxi
survival; Sole bivi bag, phone, matches, bic, 10-hour candle, large lightweight plastic bag, compass, bear spray, lightweight fleece hat, sweatshirt, 50 feet para-cord, toilet paper(used as flagging too) super mini light, Phazer emergency red- light camera.

This year Ill be hunting ib timber. so my water will be lighter, maybe rain gear, and long underwear

My pack is heavy, without water the gear is light

Only thing I would add to Phantom list is a small tarp in case you get one, tie straps and duct tape or Leukotape tape for blisters. Also a fan of water filter like Tigger. I do not carry all the stuff Phantom carries so I'm sure my pack is around 15 pounds
Don't for get the Benadryl.

What's inside?
Hydration: camelback 3L bladder with Sawyer in line filter.
First Aid/Survival: white tape,2 telfa pads, vaseline covered cotton balls/lighter gorilla tape wrapped around it, emergency blanket, compass, water purification tablets, magnesium fire starter/flint steel.
Game care: Two knives (fixed blade Grohman and Havalon Piranta), TAGS Bomb bag set, 3 zip ties,Pen to sign tag, tags, Stone glacier roll top meat bag
Other items in pack: 50' paracord, day's snack pack in gallon zip lock, primary headlamp and backup w/xtra batteries, xtra calls, rain gear, vest, pair of gloves, TP, small camera, map

No idea what it weighs. I don't weigh it, need everything in there so don't worry about the weight. First Aid stuff is in bright yellow stuff sack, game care in blaze orange stuff sack and hunting/other items in a green stuff sack.

Nothing else not mentioned above, but instead of a tarp I use those cheap emergency space blankets for a tarp while breaking a bull down. Inexpensive and very light, but are a little slick if on steep hill. Another helpful tip I found was to wrap electrical tape around your knife handle a few times, just to have some handy and costs no weight.

I don't use a tarp. I do the gutless method and skin from the back down. Lay the half hide out and put the meat on the hide.

Some good lists here.

In addition to a lot of the items already mentioned, I also carry a Leatherman. Love those things. I also usually carry a puffy vest or jacket.
