So, I am seriously debating on buying an OTC tag for Idaho unit 76 archery. I'M ON THE FENCE! I live in Utah and hunt elk every year as it is so I'm just looking for MORE elk opportunity. I'm willing to fork out the money for a non res tag and I'm willing to scout and put in the ground work...I'm just gun shy on buying a tag without having much to zero information on the unit (public). I just want to talk to someone that has a good working knowledge of the area and could give me a good idea if this unit is the best bang for my buck. I know a lot of out of staters hunt it and I have heard it gets hit pretty hard...anyone willing to help a guy make up his mind or suggest a different unit or anything is greatly appreciated. I know asking for info on a forum (especially as a first post) is like a carnal sin to most on here so I appreciate any morsel or crumb you might share! Thanks in advance!

I have never been there personally, but I know a guy who hunts that area every year. He says that there are tons of hunters but if you go the extra mile you can get away from most of the crowds. He gets into elk every year but he also said they are very call shy.

76 is part of the Diamond Creek Elk Zone. If you get this tag you also get to hunt unit 66A. This unit has a Tag Quota for OTC so if you are interested, you should get in as soon as you can. I have hunted Tex Creek to the north but not Diamond. My understanding is that there are more elk in Diamond earlier (sept /oct) and then the migration pushes them into Tex in Nov / Dec. Just like all OTC areas, get a bit away from the main roads for the best success.
