Legal in Colorado?

No, I'm not talking about pot. Just wondering what all of your opinions are on parking and hiking through one unit to get to the unit that you have a tag to hunt in. Let's say I put my bow in a case or pull off my broad heads and pack them away until I get to the unit I'm legal to hunt in. Has anybody done this? Or is this just setting yourself up for a ticket from the game warden?

Are you referring to parking/camping in a draw unit that you didn't draw but actually hunting in an open OTC unit next to it? How far away? It would not be illegal to camp there but yes be careful you wouldn't want a warden to get the wrong idea! (grin) Is there a reason you wouldn't camp in the unit you intend to hunt?

The unit I intend to hunt is limited draw, and the area I'm looking at is a lot further from a road than it would be if I crossed a short distance across the OTC unit that borders it. I just planned on parking there and camping in the unit I'm hunting. I hear the road into that area can be bad, so I just wanted to have a plan b

Awwww You got me all excited like a teenage girl, then you disappointed me like a teenage boy... BOOOOO anyways on to your real question. You are free to camp and hike any where you like.. The law is that you can only take game in a unit that you hold a tag for. There is no crime committed in caring a gun or bow across an OTC unit to get into your limited draw unit. Even if a Game Officer stops you and checks you they will see that you have a legal license. They may ask you if you know where you are? Once you explain what you are doing they will let you go or even give you some more tips. Remember that it is the hunters responsibility to know where he or she is at all times. It's the officers responsibility to prove that laws are broken. So when you kill an animal be sure to mark it with your GPS just incase you are coming back across the OTC unit with your kill that you can lead the officers back to prove you killed the game in the appropriate unit... But it also your right not to show them where you killed. The officers have no right to force you to show them anything. But I have found that if you are on the up and up and you can assist them in determining things quickly that they will be quick and friendly and on there way.

I hunt on the border between an OTC unit and a draw unit. I have traveled between the two units all the time. I pass game wardens a lot while on the trail. I usually wave and continue on. The only time I have ever been questioned was in camp not during my travels. I would be willing to bet that is because a game warden has to have a reason to stop you. Yes that reason can be to check to see if you have a license or what not but most are going to wait until they have some better reason then that. Like seeing you with game on your back or on your ATV, horse, or vehicle.

If I was lucky enough to get stopped because I had some meat in my pack, id be happy to drag the gamey back in to the kill site. Maybe he'd throw a little on his back. I figured I wouldnt be doing anything illegal, but you know what happens when you make assumptions

I know of an area in the unit I hunt that the only practical way of getting to it is from a neighboring unit.. I've been into the area, but have never hunted there yet.
