Retiring

Well I am both happy and sadden by the fact that in 2 weeks I will be retiring from hairdressing. After 15 years I am ready to take on a new adventure. I will be heading out setting new sails and focusing on new horizons. I am heading to Durango Colorado for the summer then heading to Steamboat Springs for the Fall. I am looking forward to Starting College again and learning something new. My passion for the outdoors and it's calling is just to great. The elk need to be very scared this year as we are planning on 55 days straight in the woods.

I have always had a thing for guiding. I have always wanted to work on a boat as a mate. I have a thing for EMT work. Or maybe get a biology degree and work for the state in some way. Unfortunately I don't have a pension so I am having to work my way back through school but I am fortunate enough to have a network of clients and who have become friends that are offering me a pretty good gig for the summer fixing up some new cabins they are purchasing or what ever handy man stuff they have. My girlfriend Is coming along and is doing housekeeping work or handyman stuff. What can I say I have an amazing girlfriend. Then she is fallowing me up to Steamboat in the fall. We are hunting Antelope, Elk, Deer, and Bear for 55 straight days. Then its off to school for both of us as her maintenance runs out. We will need to find a way to survive.

Hmm, with all those loose ends maybe you shouldn't semi retire yet? (grin) Good luck on your endeavors, sounds like you have a lot of irons in the fire there!

James, best of luck in your future direction. Doing work you are passionate for, that is one key to a happy life. Another is a great mate. Almost 2 months in the elk woods sounds like it fits on the Happy Life list as well. Any thought to making some income from your custom plastic dipping? Your stuff pictured here is seriously awesome.

Loose ends? Not fallowing you there. I don't have any debt. I just need to find something to occupy my time and figure out a way to pay for more schooling if I go down that road. After 15 years of standing on my feet and listening to women talk about their lives while making them look beautiful I figure it's time to do something in the outdoors. Something I am really passionate about. I have done very well for myself as a hairstylist but I am no longer passionate about doing other peoples hair. Both my girlfriend and I are financially set for the next 5 years. So we can either play and figure life out later or we can get a jump start on it now and keep my reserves in tact. Because hairstyling doesn't have a paying pension we both need to find careers that will keep us in the comfort we have been accustom to living is all I was saying. I am pretty stoked to be setting new sails and seeing new horizons. Life is funny... I watch lots of people bust their asses only to have no financial retirement so they work themselves into their graves. Thats not me. I want to be living in the now and enjoying life. So I figure what better time then now. With 5 years of not having to worry about income what better time then now to go back to school to learn something else. Be it a mate on a boat or working as a guide in the fishing and hunting world. I have always enjoy biology as well as 1st responder type work. I figure a summer of doing physical labor in the mountains will help me decide what road I want to travel down. Narrow my options a little.

I have owned a hydrographics company for 4 years now. As much as I love doing the work. I can't stand being around paint fumes all day every day. I enjoy dipping more as a hobby but I don't want to make it a full time job. I appreciate the compliment though.

I am not sure what the difference is between retirement and quitting is? So I refer to my situation as a retirement. I am over doing hair after 15 straight years. The toll on my legs and back and wrist is just to much. I have owned my own business so I can't quit on myself but you can retire. Right? As far as a career change? I guess you could say that even though I don't need to work, for at least 5 years. So I don't really have a career in mind yet. I have owned multiple companies over the years however being stuck inside is not my thing anymore. I really enjoy my time a field and for now the opportunity to live like a gypsy is appealing. I live in the "DASH" thats the little thing they put between your birthdate and your death date. Most people don't have an interesting DASH. Theirs reads like this... I worked for ever and did very little. I want my dash to read like a J.K. Rowlings book. A real life fantasy.

Got it! I got confused. Retirement for me is "I'm done". Doing what I need to go to draw from savings and retirement accounts. School would be for fun only. No more career ideas.

Congratulations! I made a major change a few years ago, I only regret not doing it sooner. Enjoy your summer/fall!
