Extreme Elk Magazine!

Who subscribes to this magazine, if you haven't have you had a chance to check an issue out? I've been considering looking into it but so far haven't taken the time to do so but it appears to be pretty nice. Any feedback on it? Thanks guys!

I had a script for Extreme Elk when it first came out but let the subscription lapse. It is actually a pretty dang good magazine. Really enjoy all the hunter stories in it. May have to pick it up again

I subscribe. Its a pretty good, but the articles are all very similar....hiked in several hours / miles for days... SUDDENLY the bull let out a scream... then we were all high fiving... and now the work begins....

Some of the gear review are ok, but except for the great pictures, you get more substance from this website.

I have both the printed subscription as well as the online version. The magazine is well worth the cost. Yes the articles are about extreme elk hunting. The hardships and the struggles but there is plenty of great info for all levels of hunting. The gear reviews are very impartial and very honest. The magazine is growing and expanding. They just signed Randy Newburg on as a contributing editor so he will be giving his insight for the DIY guys. I find that the magazine is a better read then Eastmans but that mag is also an excellent resource for tips and techniques.

This is my problem with many of these magazines that publish reader-submitted stories. Like EBJ and EHJ. They aren't informative or educational. They are generally formulaic and predictable and typically boring. For me, they are no different than reading a story on an internet forum...which are free.

I have picked up copies off the news stand before but have not subscribed. Also have read copies from buddies that subscribe.
The stories are interesting from an entertainment perspective but I don't feel as if I learn much that would make me a better elk caller or harvester. The gear reviews are well done. I prefer Elk Hunter mag. personally. I'll admit it, I read other elk and bowhunting related mags. over the years but didn't really start to understand how to effectivly call elk until I found Elknuts material. Our harvest stats. and harvest success have gone way up because of the knowledge we have gleaned from EN. When an elk encounter doesn't go our way, we don't worry about it because we know we can produce other opportunities. Right now we average a Bull in reasonable archery range for every two days in the field. Between my partner and I, we had somthing like 17 bulls in range last season. We did hunt seperate some of the time and called for others , all of which had shot ops. One advantage we had when we started using EN system was that we had both called and harvested bulls before and had hunted elk quite a bit so we could relate well and apply the new knowledge. We had done lots wrong and had blown many opportunities already so we could be "quick studies" with Elknuts calling and hunting system. My advice to somone new to the EN system is study the material over and over and learn to make realistic sounds on demand. Once you experience a scenario in the field and taste success, you won't forget what to do. Much of the time now we just know what to do in a given situation. Its all about creating as many opportunities as possible. Eventually, an opportunity/encounter will hit pay dirt. I mean pay meat and antler! The real thing that sets EN apart from the rest is his ability to call elk in all phases and times of the season under many conditions. Bottom line, EN gives a hunter a huge bag of tricks to use on those wily beasts. Every EN technique or method that we have tryed has worked to bring bulls in.

I have every issue, and will continue to subscribe. I have found it to be helpful for most things and do enjoy the stories. It does have helpful tips and gear reviews as well.

I also have every issue. It is a great value at $20.00 you get a DVD and also great reading four times a year including gear reviews, backcountry tips, and great stories from real hunters like all of us that are passionate about DIY hunting. I was also lucky enough to have my story chosen to be in the Fall 2014 issue, so I may be a little bias. As a new elk hunter I subscribed to the magazine as just another way to absorb more information. Someone new to elk hunting can learn a lot from other people's stories.

I subscribed for a year but didn't care for the magazine and did not renew. If you want to read generic DIY hunting stories then you will enjoy the publication. Most of the stories are very similar, just different states and weapons. They are written by regular Joe's and that is apparent in the writing. Tips and tactics stuff is few and far between.

At the same time I subscribed to Elk Hunter and Western Hunter and I still subscribe to those. They have the same generic stories but better content on tips, tactics, and gear review type stuff. I don't read any of the stories in either one.

Agreed, all the stories are the same to me....they all bore me except Bugle.
I remember Eastmans had an article on sheep rifles that was like half a page, nothing but fluff. If you've read one story, you've read them all.

I am a two year subscriber and I love it! I like the personal stories as they are all involve a successful hunt and shows the many different ways it can be done. The photos are usually excellent. I recommend it.

I had a subscription since the start. I have been trying for two years now to do a full page add with my elk calls but have been brushed aside so I have decided NOT to renew my subscription ! Fair is fair I guess !!

I think it would be very hard times at Extreme Elk Magazine the day we see advertizements for Wappiti River game calls, Primos, ElkNut, Phelps, Glacier Country Calls, or any other game call company. I would not take that personally, it's just business. If you enjoy the articles and content I would not let that tit for tat mentality come into play.

It's a good magazine. I have been fortunate enough to make it into two issues, so I'm a little biased. I really enjoy the tips, tactics and gear sections. I agree with some that the hunter-submitted stories can get a little repetitive, and I usually just flip past them anymore. That's how any of the hunting magazines are though, with the exception of Bugle. Overall I would recommend it.

Yep, Corey's dad Rockie owns Bugling Bull, so this should come as no surprise.

Wapiti River, you have you tried advertising with any other magazines? Elk Hunter Magazine, Eastmans and Huntin' Fool would be other good options to look at.

Yes by brushed a side basically each time I asked Corey the open spaces seemed to be taken. Corey ask me to call him again at a later date for the next years issues and I called when he said to and got the same thing.....sorry we are full already buy he said they may add more pages in the fall issue so I said perfect I can pay right now for the space. He said please hold off till we see what we are going to do about adding to the issue.

It's no big deal as I know both Corey and Rockie and they are both super nice to me. We all call with each other at worlds and I'm sure they are not scared of a little competition !! I just thought it would be nice to give elk hunters other elk calls other than just there own. I'm not trying to step on toes but I am trying to help elk hunters to be successful on there hunts.

I'm at a tradeshow right now and have talked with multiple other magazines and have other deals in the works !! It would just have been nice to advertise in an all elk mag. Who knows maybe in the future it will all work out. I will keep trying and maybe one day we'll be seen in Extreme Elk Mag.

As to the question......Yes its a great mag and I have countless issues at home and in elk camp. All elk and anything elk is all I think !! I have also purchased many subscriptions for many of my friends so I hope they are not to upset when they realise they are also not getting the mag anymore !! LOL As if they would be as I was paying for it !! LOL

I am a subscriber and I like it. I like the regular Joe's stuff. Lots more otc stuff, but less informative than elk hunter magazine (I also subscribe too). They recently did a survey and are going to have more informative articles in the future.

Like others, I subscribed for a year than let it lapse. The magazine is ok, I just did not find it had anything new that interested me. I had several issues that just sat around until was instructed to take them to the basement.

Sure is a variety of thoughts across the board? I wasn't expecting that, hmmm! No doubt it takes a lot of sincere dedication for Cory & Dirk to put their publication out every quarter, it's not easy to do! I do hear you guys about most magazines fall into the same hum drum articles & repetitious stories but heck what can a guy do differently? It's just great to see the various elk magazines out there for both education & entertainment. No doubt the stories over ride the tips & tactics portions as well as Ads as most have commented on. I do receive the Elk Hunter Mag. it comes to me regularly ever since I used to write their Tips & Tactics portion in the past. It is a good mag & I'd recommend it to others, I actually miss writing for them but that's how it goes! (grin)

I may still consider the Extreme Elk Mag just to see the comparison, as I said it takes a lot of hard work & dedication to put these things together & I'd like to thank those that do this for the industry!

I guess it just comes down to the fact that you can't please everybody. It is quite clear that EE magazine is directed a the regular Joe - most contributions are from regular people hunting places that any of us could hunt. I've read several stories in there now from general zones here in my own province. I like that about the magazine; its the same reason I enjoy reading Big Buck magazine outta Saskatchewan. Let's be honest, if the magazine was oriented as a "how to" then people would whine that there isn't enough hunting stories. If it primarily showed animals from expensive ranches, then guys would moan that it doesn't showcase what the "average" guy is out there doing, and vice versa. My thoughts are that it costs a whopping $5 per issue, AND you get a solid DVD with it - its not breaking anybody's bank, and the content is certainly worth $5 per issue. I enjoy the magazine for what it is. Its certainly worth a look.

It's very very very hard to come up with new/original/interesting content that satisfies jaded veteran hunters and newbies alike, I don't know how you do that, I applaud the effort

I prefer the information put forth by the great hunters on this forum. I've read some pretty darn good hunting stories right here! And the best part is....they are from regular guys who freely share the wealth of information and happy to teach and don't ignore those seeking knowledge.

I agree with Trophy Hill. I am a subscriber to Extreme Elk and really enjoy it from an entertainment standpoint, but being new to Elk hunting I have found the information on this forum and on the elknut videos to be far better
