Flat Land Elk Tactics

Open any textbook or watch elk videos and one of the top strategies for putting elk on the ground involve optics. In my neck of the woods (Saskatchewan) optics are somewhat useless. Elk do inhabit the farmland and hide in agriculture fields but come September the crops have all been harvested and offer little for hiding places. For the most part they feed in the fields under the cover of darkness and head back into vast expanses of dense forest before first light where optics become useless. Unfortunately scanning from ridges is not an option.

Turn to the next page of the textbook and wallows become a place of interest. Although the elk in our region do wallow it is next to impossible to pinpoint. There is water everywhere. Sloughs, muskegs, lakes, creeks, rivers etc.

I am interested to know how you would hunt these creatures? Is it locating them in the night, walking and calling, still hunting? What are your thoughts?

Can u catch them coming off those ag fields at daylight? Alot of times that first lil bit of shooting light they're just getting off of them in my experiences. You may have to sneak in 2 hrs before daylight to ur stand but... also I would use trail cams like crazy. You could get some stuff figrd out with their help & eliminate alot of time.
