New Broadhead

Postby Seminole » 01 06, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Guys: If you get a chance, you need to check out Magnus's new broadhead offering: The Black Hornet. I have three packs of the 125's coming, so I am going to put them to the test. They have a 1 1/4 cut and I have to say I am very interested.

Paul:

They are. I am interested to see if they maintain the same penetration that the original buzzcut has. If so, it may be a nice balance between penetration, cutting diameter, and accuracy. They are supposed to be blazer vane friendly. The main blade is .059 in thickness and the bleeders are .040. The cutting diameter is 1 1/4 by 1 7/16 which a serious improvement over the stinger.

They aren't new Noah. That's old news. Ok.... a week old. ha ha

My take on them: I like them a lot. Mainly because they are heavy duty. I like the Magnus heads because unlike Muzzys and Thunderheads the back of the blades are sharpened too. So if you don't get a pass through which is common on elk, they will do more damage AND most likely come out the way they went in leaving a great blood trail. On the downside due to the width and moreso because of the blade angle I don't thin you will see quite the penetration you get with their other heads. I will bet that they fly like field points as all Magnus heads doo which is awesome. All in all I think they make a great elk broadhead sight unseen.

This is the serrated version the "Ser Razor" It comes in a regular non-serrated blade too.

Joe: They should be at my house by this weekend. I am going to upload a video so we can see the penetration difference between the Black Hornet and the Magnus Buzzcut. I spoke to Mike, the owner for Magnus, and he tells me there is no difference. I have a brand new Rhineheart pig that has not been shot so we are going to at least have equal mediums.

I am also going to check how blazer vane friendly they are. I love the original Magnus Buzzcut, but the two issues I had were at times a weak blood trail, (albeit everything I have hit died in sight) so it was not an issue, and I could not get them to stabilize unless I had four inch vanes or better.

If the Black Hornet can maintain the same penetration, and edge retention, as the Buzzcut, I will be sold.

What do you feel is the difference between blades that compare? Price? To me they seem very comparable in design. Just curious of your input if you are familiar with them

Brent: Solid broadheads are a fantastic broadhead. They make some high quality broadheads that fly very well from a tuned bow. I have only one complaint and that is they are darn near impossible to disassemble to resharpen. They come out of the silver tin ready to shoot, and sharp, but unless something is easy to disassemble in the field, I don't use it. They will also set you back $80 for three. They have a newer model with a 3/4 cut bleeder on the 125 model that is pretty impressive. But again, if you have to take them apart, they are major pain in the rear.

I've shot some huge mule deer with Magnus Stingers during the period I used them - they always did a fantastic amount of damage to the animal, but I always had a few issues with em. First, due to the long profile they were pretty prone to wind plane, and 2) they just didn't like being steered by Blazers for some reason. I ultimately switched to Slick Trick and have never looked back. That being said, this head looks extremely interesting. The shorter profile and heavy venting should fix both of the problems I had with the stingers and, being a Magnus product, I have no doubt that they will be tough as nails. I like the extra cutting diameter, but as was mentioned above, I feel that there may be some penetration issues due to the steep blade angle (not likely to have much, if any affect on deer, but as we all know, elk are a completely different ballgame). I may have to grab a pack of these and give em a try, heck, what does a guy have to lose? Thanks for posting up the video!

Ok guys: I got some 100's in and here are my initial Magnus Black Hornet pro's:

1) BLAZER VANE FRIENDLY! Finally!

2) Fly like a dart.

3) Your going to get a huge bloodtrail. I have good bloodtrails and not so good blood trails with the Magnus Buzzcut, albeit everything died in site. Magnus Black Hornet is going to leave a big a$$ hole in the game shot.

4) Plenty of penetration!

5) In the past I have usually gotten an "X" cut wound with Magnus Buzzcut: These boys leave an oval that is OVER 1 1/4 inches diameter.

6) The bleeder blades will absolutely decimate your target! I would hate to see what they would do to an animal in the very unlikely case you don't get a pass through.

7) In short, this is by far the best broadhead I have seen in a very long time. The edge retention is absolutely amazing for a short style broadhead. It is obvious that Mike made sure there was sufficient blade thickness (.059) to support the edge and it shows. Zero chance of tip curl as well.

I will get you some side by side pics of penetration between the Buzzcut and the Hornet later this week. In short there is no real difference. Magnus has a winner.

The 125's won't be out until March. Demand for the Black Hornet broadhead is just too high right now and they can't make them fast enough and now I understand why. If you want some, my advice is to order from Magnus direct and try to forget they are gong to come in.

I really am pumped for the 125's which have a 1 7/16 cutting diameter....

There is no cons to this broadhead yet for me to report on.

OK does that mean you need my shipping address now?

Hey... wanted to let you know I might be hitting the Keys in a few weeks. I'm fresh out of lobster so I need to stock up on some seafood. Plus Bike Week in Daytona is around the corner. I thought about riding my bike up to Maine for their lobsters but I flipped a coin and Florida won best of 3. Plus bike week in Maine right now could mean losing a couple fingers.

Thanks for the review. Must be nice to be able to stand out in your yard for more than 2 minutes and shoot your bow. It was 7 below here this morning.

During Bike Week.

In Florida March 7-14. I'll probably be in Daytona the 7th and leave for Key West on the 9th or 10th. Then back to Daytona to hang out on the 13th and 14th and head back to the artic zone on the 14th.

Looks like a great head. As wide as they are I have a couple questions .... Do you think there will be an issue with planing? Have you tried them in wind? How do they perform at longer distances? Ok 3 questions :) Thanks, Bob

Shot them out to 80 yards.... No planing, and they stay flipping sharp! The wind has been gusting up to 20 mph off and on... They shoot like a dart... Total confidence.

They look good but if they are $80 bucks like the Solid heads I'm out !! To rich for this cat !!

If they come out with a reasonable price $30-$50 then people may be inclined to try them. But that is up to them !!

No Wapiti, the prices aren't out-RAGE-eous. Here's a link to the Archery Warehouse. $33.33 for a three pack. Not bad at all huh.

Once you add shipping they are $1 cheaper on eBay at $39.99.

Will you guys be testing them a little more ? I'm wondering what happens with a slight deflections how much they will get turned. I know that sounds stupid but on say the Shuttle t's a small branch doesn't really affect them. Just would be nice to see a few more demo's if you had the chance.

They look great though and would be worth giving them a try ! Maybe in Bear and Turkey season which is just around the corner !!

Are these black hornets flying very similar to the Stingers? Similar meaning you could shoot the Black hornets and Stingers and not have to make any sight adjustments?

Wapiti I'm not sure I understand your question. They are pretty much a standard cut on contact head. One nice design factor is the shorter ferrule. Since it is shorter it is more stout... less likely to bend. The other thing that is really the cherry on top of this head is the blade thickness. Between the thickness and the short ferrule the tip is less likely to roll over which can be an issue with some COC broadheads. Don't quite know what you mean by deflections. But I do know that the COV tip is more effective than the Muzzy type chisel tip on the Shuttle Ts.

Kessler, I would say the answer to your question is yes. Seminole (Noah) was the one who first introduced me to Magnus heads. He was a client of mine in Montana and he left me a 3 pack of Buzzcuts. I have to admit I was skeptical at first. They looked like they might plane. But he told me they flew like field points and he was right. I get great groups with them.

I talked to Noah on the phone yesterday. He was um.... giggly! haha He sent me a pic of his 80 yard groups with the Black Hornet head. It was pretty impressive. So I would say they shoot like field points. So if your bow is tuned to the point where the Stingers flew the same as field points.... the Hornets should be right down the pipe too.

Personally I'm sold. I'm low on broadheads right now so I am in the market for some. I have a moose hunt coming up so I want something that is really going to penetrate through thick hair and heavy hide and also be heavy duty enough to handle thicker than average ribs. I've always liked cut on contact heads like the Stingers and Buzzcuts. The other thing worth mentioning is that Mike at Magnus heads is about the nicest guy you'd ever meet. I like giving my business to good people. On top of that he backs his heads with an unconditional lifetime warranty. You can shoot one into a frickin steel plate, crush the crap out of it, mail it to him and he will replace it. I'm going to go with the regular Black Hornets. Seminole has been shooting the Ser Razor. I'm 100% certain they will fly the same.

Noah is a stickler for detail. The guy could test rockets for NASA. Yesterday he was so excited about every aspect of these new heads. He must have repeated 10 times the fact that after X amount of shots into a target they were still laser sharp. I'm sure he will be back on here soon if you have any more questions. if you do let me know and I'll shoot him a text telling him we need a little more feedback.

Wapiti: I understand completely what you are talking about and your not going to get a deflection issue with the Black Hornet that I have observed. I will be doing full blown deflection tests this weekend, so I will let you know the results. Right now I am doing edge retention test and these heads passed with flying colors. This is a very accurate broadhead as well.

Joe: I sure hope so. I deleted my BS account.... I met many good people on that site but they are now officially circling the drain....

Wapiti: If you are a member of Facebook, there was a picture of a hard quartering away shot on a hog with a Black Hornet that was posted on Magnus Broadhead FB page. Zero deflection, but a 4 inch entry wound. If I find it, I will post it here....

There are allot good broadheads out there folks, however, every once in a while a broadhead comes along that is special. Sort of like the 150 VPA, The Black Hornet has that special appeal.

Also wondering if anyone used them this season and how the results were.....
The serrated look like they will create more tear in the tissue but how does that relate to penetration. I don't have a real heavy arrow for elk...maybe even a little light?

They are not as durable as a Slick Trick head. These have an aluminum ferrule and ST's have steel. I have bent/broken several of the Black Hornets. They all bend in exactly the same placed where the blades meet the steel ring at the back. They all break in the same place as well, where the bleeder blade goes in there is a notch. They snap off at the top of the notch. Some missed the target, some shot through the target and some hit the metal strapping in a Glen Del Full Rut. Any that miss, go through or hit the strapping bend or break, they are done.

I also shoot ST magnums and Razor Tricks. Shoot the same target. Some miss the target, go through the target and some hit the metal strapping. I've never ruined the ferrule on either head. I did have one of the Razor Tricks that the blade retention screw broke off still in the ferrule so couldn't get the blades out or the remainder of the screw. That was the only terminal failure I've had with a ST.

On both the Razor trick and the Black Hornet a philips head screw is used for blade retention. On both heads this is a bad design. It should be an allen head or a torx head. They are hard to get out and most times you strip the head or at least damage it getting them out. If you have hit something hard it damages the screw and makes it really hard to get them out. ST sends new screws with the replacement blades not sure if Magnus does?
