SPOT

Any of you kids use a SPOT? I bought one (original) in the Cabelas bargin cave a few years ago, but I've never activated it. I'm trying decide wether to keep it and actually use it, or just put it on eBay. Any thoughts on these things?

If it were me i would sell it and really look at the Delorme inreach se.i have one and love it.two way texting and month to month pay with no contracts.the spot is null if you ask me compared to the inreach

I have not used one. I researched them extensively when the First Gen product came out. Based on the research I did I would sell it if possible but I wouldn't activate it. They had a lot of problems with them.

I looked into one, but ended up buying a Delorme InReach instead. I really liked the two-way communication via texting that the in reach offered.

Just to echo everyone else, I used a SPOT for two years. It works fine, but only one way. I now have the delorme Inreach.

And again for another inreach user. Have used SPOT and inreach. Inreach is much better.

I used a SPOT last year for the first time. It did everything I was told it would. I checked in with the wife a couple times a day. I even got to send "bull down grab your packs" to my wife and a couple of friends that didn't go along. I'm happy with it and will continue using it. My wife thought it was pretty neat clicking the link on the email and looking at where I killed the elk was on the map.

The inreach also has a link attached to every text that you can click and see on a map were you are ...fyi

I've had one for 2 years now and I love mine. I think all but one message has been successfully transmitted. True, you are limited in your messages and there is no two way communication but that is minor for me- it isn't a big deal to me if I go without hearing from someone. And the yearly subscription doesn't bother me. I can take it anywhere with me, and do, as I travel a lot for work. The way I see it, it is year 'round insurance and I budget it in that manner. I realize it isn't for everyone, but I really like mine.

I picked up one of the first gen inreach. Used it this last year out elk hunting. No more driving 70 miles to communicate with our wife. Partner had a spot but his wife used the inreach to communicate with him.

I've used the SPOT Connect for 3 years.
Pros: I unfortunately found out that the SOS does work (and it worked great!), which was the primary reason for using it, and the other predefined messages would mostly send out.
Cons: The biggest downside is your phone has to function (this goes for any Satellite device that pairs with a phone). My iPhone 4S did not like the cold. And even with 66% battery life would shut down once the temp dropped into the teens. I tried keeping my phone in my base layer chest pocket to keep it warm, but once I brought the phone into the cold air it would shut down before I could navigate to the SPOT App. I don't trust that system as a primary emergency communication device.
