What's a good call or scent to use when elk are rutting?

I can tell you I do not use any scents but what I am trying to be is scent free and always hunt the wind !! You can fool an elks eyes and ears but NEVER there NOSE !! That is rule number #1 !!

For elk calls you can use any calls you are comfortable with. Use open reed type calls and make cow and calf talk or you can learn how to use elk mouth reeds. These are the reeds that go into your mouth and are the best for making the realistic sounds of elk. The trick with mouth reeds is finding the correct one that fits your pallet and once you figure that out stick with that reed.

For cow and calf sounds try the Pink Lady or our new Black Widow. The Pink Lady is lite latex that requires very little air and tongue pressure to get sound while the Black Widow uses a thicker latex but requires very little air as well. We also do cow bugles and estrus type sounds with it. Together you can get un believable herd sounds !

For bull sounds we use multiple reeds depending on your style of calling. I tend to like single reeds as they are always the easiest to use. The double and triple reeds get hard as you need to use more air and tongue pressure to get the sounds. Single reeds although easier to use still give you great sounds from young bull all the way to Challenge type bugle and growly old bulls to Lip bawl bugles and everything in between !! My favorite reeds are the Bull Buster and our new reed which will be out soon The Reaper. The Reaper is a domed call. If you are a person with a smaller pallet then we also have a smaller domed call coming out called The Phantom. This call does everything from bull bugles and chuckles to cow and calf sounds.

When I see a manufacturer of a product like yourself give advice to someone to " Try multiple manufactures calls until you find the right one for you", that tells me you make a quality product and you are a quality individual as well. It certainly appears that you have the person's best interest at heart whether they end up buying from you in the end or not. That little statement right there will almost certainly get you some business from me as soon as I figure out exactly what I want ( I have a couple of mouth reeds but would like to add one that has a little more of a lower pitch (estrus buzz) kinda sound. My sounds come out a little too pure and high pitched I think.

Very refreshing to see a manufacturer who doesn't just try and make a sale!

We have tried to make a few reeds for our line up that should fit most guys but we all know sometimes what is good for one person just isn't right for the next guy.

I always think back to when I was learning and I would have gave my left leg if someone would have told me a few secrets !! Even the very basic question which believe me I also had " How is a mouth reed supposed to fit ".

Tigger most people do not realise I actually went a who elk season when I was young and I couldn't get any sound out of the reed I was using ! The reed worked I'm sure of it but I never had any tips on the basic's of elk talk !! LOL I can laugh about it now but it was not very funny back then as I remember tossing the reed into the bush muttering to myself !!!

So when I started to make our own line of calls I always said it's about helping getting guys going and learning the proper ways to call with reeds. So yep you are very correct in that it doesn't matter who's reeds you are using we will help no matter what. So thanks for noticing and posting the kind words !!

My favorite thing is to be working a trade show and have a young kid come up and ask if I could teach them !! I always toss them a free reed and say sure let's get started !! Within minutes that little dude will be making sounds like crazy and the smile on his face is what fuels me to keep it up !! Believe me that kid will remember that the rest of his life !! I sure did !!

A few tips and your estrus buzz issues will be a thing of the past !! There are a few easy tricks that will help you out.

I have always struggled with getting much volume on my bugles. I have called in quite a few bulls, but compared to the guys I hunt with makes me feel like I'd like more volume.

I use single Reed Primos reeds the best the white Imperial and. Yellow one.

I'm wanting to try something different, do you have any recommendations from you line.

Toby, the white Imperial Plate Primos reed is a very good reed, it will hit some fairly decent tones! Are your reeds fairly new? If not they do fatigue pretty quick depending on how & where they're stored. On the other hand try giving the Black Widow a try that Travis has, it's a pretty sweet reed, I was pleasantly surprised with it! He also may have a further recommendation for you but thought I'd pass this one reed on!

When t comes to the Primos calls I'll take the red one hands down over the white or blue. They call it the Imperial Plate. I love that one. Especially for bugling.

I'm looking forward to trying some reeds from Travis. Sounds like the Black Widow may be on my list. I'm looking for a reed that is easy to make cow sounds with but still get a decent bugle. I've got some great reeds for bugling but I can't get them soft enough for the cow sounds.

Hi guys,

Toby, Like Paul had said make sure your reeds are new but also one other tip that will help is how wide your lips are open while bugling. You may be muffling the sound down by closing off your mouth. I bugle with three levels. Slightly open lips, medium open lips and wide open lips. Depending on how much volume you want.

Along with the Black Widow you may also like the Bull Buster as it's stretch is a bit tighter than the Black Widow but still does amazing cow and calf sounds all the while allowing you to do location, lip bawls, barks and challenge bugles with ease.

We have two new reeds coming out as well. Both will be domed calls.

1. The Phantom which is a single small frame domed call designed by Shane Donner.
2. The Reaper which is our regular size frame ( Same frame as Pink Lady and Black Widow ) Single reed domed call.

These two new reeds should be out and available this week hopefully ! Just waiting on our domes to arrive from our manufacturer. Reeds are all built we just need to add the dome and tape/cut them. These reeds will be added to our website when they are available or just call and ask.
