Anyone Shed Hunting?

I haven't done much personally but it looks to be great fun & exercise & a guy could make a few bucks to boot! I just watched a video by a New Sponsor here called ShedFever, I was very impressed with this video, I didn't realize a lot of what can go into shed hunting. In watching it I noticed a lot of comparable things to actual hunting, they share some excellent info throughout the video & great scenery as they travel through several states. Yes I do, it is a great way to get out , work the quads God gave me , test out new gear while I am out , and see scrapes and trails in the mud or snow. I just went out today, we have had somebody hitting our area for deer sheds pretty hard this year. But it is always good to be out. When deer shed hunting I will throw 30 -40 lbs in my pack and get a workout at the same time. When shed hunting for elk I go empty , elk sheds add weight enough. Here are a few we found all 1 draw within 100 yards of each other, 2 years ago when the snows were heavy.

A few years ago we walked in on 7 wolves feeding on this bull , we tried to wait them out until they left the carcass , but it got dark so we went back in a few days later
and got the antlers.

Headed out tomorrow afternoon. Only ever found a few deer sheds, one moose paddle, and never any elk. Im really looking forward to getting out with a great buddy, getting some fresh air, and exercise.

Went out yesterday just for exercise and did some glassing. I saw 3 guys on the same hillside pushing Deer around and shed hunting. Both the Bucks they spooked over the saddle still had their antlers. I have found some Elk sheds in the past while scouting/Bear hunting at around 6500. It's a thrill to find antlers!

Got lucky and found one today. All photo credits and editing to make me look this good go to Backcountry and his spiffy new camera. Its the same one that's going to be taking a bunch of grip and grins this fall

The horn is last years model but still in really good shape. I gave it to my boy and he's been telling me stories all night about the deer horn he found by the tree. I think he's good enough at BSing that I'll probably set him up with an elknut account. He'd fit in here for sure

Nice sheds!
On a recent javelina hunt, I found a shed I wasn't sure existed: an antelope horn sheath. Hunters had told me that antelope lose the outer sheath as their horns grow, but I thought they were pulling my gullible newbie leg. But nope, this is the real deal...
Now if I could only find a jackalope shed, my collection would be complete!

Nice find! Antelope sheds like that are tough to come by! If you start claiming you're finding Jackelope racks we'll start worrying about you!

Pronghorn are the only animal to shed the horn. They are also the only animal with a forked horn. One of many reasons they are my favorite animal!

Because horns are keratin (like hair and finger nails) they are not as tough as antler and disappear quickly. So it is a great find!!

Elknut1, you all will be the first to know when I find that jackalope shed. I never really believed in Santa, but jackalopes? Always... :lol:

Here's a close-up of the hollow sheath, and you can see the compressed keratin/hair fibers.

Only animal with a forked horn? What about the rhino?

Just had 12 deer, one a 4x4 still packing, eating alfalfa in my backyard
Was watching hoping the buck would drop when the damn neighbor dog came in running them off. I only have one neighbor but of course it has to be somebody who lets her dogs run loose and chase deer.

My prediction is we wont be on good terms for long.

I don't think so, but I won't claim to know everything. I think rhinos have a keratin horn that keeps growing. But no other horn below.

Yes, I have been to three states this year looking for bucks and captured a few nice ones on film...getting excited for the next shedfever video.

Went out yesterday and saw about 30 bulls with their head gear intact. Interesting part was I saw about 5 MD bucks that still had their horns. They were small 3 and 4 pointers. With the easy winter they look great and definitely are not in there "normal" wintering areas.. Shed hunting is going to be a bit more difficult this year I imagine as everything is spread out more.

Have you guys used your dogs to find sheds? My brother trained his 6 year old lab for 15 minutes in the living room and the next day he brought a nice shed back to him. Another guy we know has his dog REALLY trained and finds a ton of them.

Friday I was out glassing some nice bucks. I was hoping something would fall off when the jumped a fence. Ill check again Monday
