New Years Elk Hunting Resolution!

Postby ElkNut1 » 12 24, 2014 •  [Post 1]

My resolution for this year is to actually "jog"!!! I've never really done it to any extent so it will be interesting to include it into my my normal 3 day a week workout & pack carrying! I hope I can tell a difference in these Idaho mountains & possibly WY if we draw! (grin) It should be fun & interesting.

What is your resolution for 2015 that you hope to step up your endurance game this year in the elkwoods?

Mine is to exercise all year long and not try to get in hunt shape in the last 30 days. That never works out very good.

My one resolution if you want to call it that is to finally after many years of dreaming about it and having plans fall through.... to go to Alaska to hunt moose. Instead of planning it and saving the money later I already bought my license and set the money aside. It will be my 50th birthday present to myself.

Since I will be in Alaska for much of the month of September this will be the 3rd year in a row that I don't bow hunt for elk. So, after buying the right (expensive) equipment for the job I am going to do what I said I was going to do several years ago when I bought it: Do my homework to be able to consistently hit an 8 inch or less target out to 1000 yards. And then go shoot a 6 point bull at 150 yards.

I am also committed to getting a bull for a friend and his dad who are coming down from New Brunswick Canada. It will most likely be a once in a lifetime hunt for them so I want to do everything I can to make it happen.

I gave up on the losing weight thing. I could go without food for a month and not lose an ounce. As far as staying in shape: When I see antlers it's like I lost 40 pounds and ran daily marathons all year! I don't know where the energy comes from but nothing can stop me.

Mine is weird... haha! I want to aim lower on my shots! No more shooting for middle of animals. I missed two does this year with my bow. One at 42 yards she dropped over a foot before the arrow got there. The other was at 30 yards and she dropped almost the same amount and the arrow shaved her back. My elk and my buck that I harvested were both a touch high.... but they are in the freezer! :D I'm aiming heart for heart shots in all my practice this year. I would rather miss low than hit high. Its a crushing blow to the confidence meter when an animal jumps your string!

Continue getting in better shape and lose 12 lbs. Even though I've been doing cardio for 3 years straight, it's still not enough, I need to get fitter.

Continue to keep shape, run my three days a week, more packing with loads on this year. As the numbers in my age go up, I have to work harder to be in the shape I should be, to hunt elk in the places I like to go,

I am trying the Paleo diet thing, (2 days in and it is no fun so far) I want to be under 200 pounds and in much better shape than last year. Elliptical, jogging and hiking is in my future.

The biggest one for me is losing 17 pounds. That will put me in great shape. If I lose 12 pounds, I will be satisfied, but barely. I cringe even writing that I will be satisfied with 12. 17 is the goal. Well make that 17.2 as I want to get under 180.

I had a lot of ankle pain this last year (lots of previous injuries finally catching up with me) - it was a gut check but I didnt let it keep me from getting where I wanted. This year I am going to lose a bunch of weight and get in primo physical shape and see if that helps.

I am going to get way better at calling.

This is the year I finally kill a big game animal with my bow!

Kill my first bull with my bow! Keep working out and be in better shape than I was last year. I was in decent shape last year and handled the mountains okay. I can do better though. I was in Colorado last year. This year will be New Mexico or Idaho, depends on how the draw shakes out. Likely Idaho and it looks like the area I'll be in is rugged so better get my big boy britches on!!!

My goal for this year is to hunt with a traditional bow if I can work up enough draw weight.
With a compound bow, I assumed cold temps would be my worst enemy when drawing on a bull. Not even! My own adrenaline is what made that draw cycle so difficult. It sure motivated me to focus on my trad bow again. Fingers crossed...

Go for it!
I had no worries hunting with a 45# at 20 yards and under this past season. My back up bow was 40#.

That's really good to know. Even with a compound, I don't take shots longer than ~20 yards, so this sounds do-able. Thanks!

Mine is to do something every day in perpetration for elk hunting. Whether it be running, lifting, pouring over maps, going through my library of Paul's material, or shooting. Not just staying in shape but increasing the intensity of my workouts so that when Sept rolls around I am at peak performance for "game time".
Get out earlier, go farther, stay longer..KEEP HAMMERING
