How would you all play this situation out. You have a month to archery hunt. You have two buddies who have tags for one unit, your tag is for a neighboring unit. You guys all hunt together. You have one experience guy in your group, one some what experience and you have one no experience what so ever. How do you split your time between units? How would you deal with seeing lots of animals in one unit but not the other? How do you deal with elk in both units? and finally not seeing elk in either unit?

EDIT: Indian Summer brought up a good question so I'll add in some details here. One unit is a PP unit requiring say 2PP to draw while the neighboring unit is an OTC unit. You are in the OTC unit while your two friends have the draw unit. You can also flip this around if you want to really play this situation out.

I say equal time in both units. All help each other out and share everything.
On seeing (or not seeing) elk, you can only play it as it comes. There can be no blaming or excuses. It is what it is. Try to make good plans and then execute them.

I would go fill my tag early, so it is out of the way. Then go help the two guys. The thing I don't like is three guys in a group, too much movement, scent and so on. So I would take one at a time.

Agree with GS on the quantity of hunters on a given archery hunt. I know folks have good success with three hunters/triangle method but I much prefer hunting as a duo vs. a triple team. As far as not getting into animals in one or the other units, that would have to be addressed at the time I suppose (if they are draw tags, I would imagine there is some quantity of elk there, yes?). I'd give my tag, in my unit, a shot for a period of time, hopefully connecting but even if I didn't after X days, I'd probably head on over to the other unit to call for my buddies and help pack out their elk. As I get a bit older, I much more enjoy sharing a camp with friends that camping/hunting by myself for any period of time. Anyway, I know for a fact that my buddies have some good sipping bourbon at their camp and would appreciate me calling for them

Did it take everybody an equal amount of time to draw? I'd give precedence to the guy who took the longest to draw. If equal time, if the most experienced guy is just meat hunting then I'd do everything I could to try and help him get his bull down so that I could try and get some 1 on 1 time with him in my unit (assuming I'm the least experienced). In an ideal world I see it working out this way - most experienced guy tags out first (if he's meat hunting), least experienced guy gets a few days working with the most experienced guy while the moderately experienced guy hunts solo, then once you've learned a few tips from the experienced guy he moves to the moderately experienced guy and helps him out while you try solo for a few days - trade the most experienced guy back and forth from there on as time/schedules allow (and if he's interesting in helping out that often). Reconvene each night and discuss what did/didn't work, discuss new tactics to try the next day.

One unit is a draw unit bordering a OTC unit. And lets just say it's a 2 PP unit and Yes you all have the same amount of time. One full month to get it all done.

Assuming calling and hunting gets better as the month of Sept progresses. Also assuming all 3 are camped together, on the border of the LE and OTC units. Further assuming a hypothetical perfect relationship between all 3 hunters, with full cooperation to whatever plan the huntmeister proposes (like THAT ever happens ). First week or 2 is schooling, w all 3 together @ times, the honcho mentoring the middle guy how to help the newb. Cover lots of ground in the unit where the 2 tags are. Every 3rd day or so, the honcho hunts his own unit while the other 2 practice their new skills an knowledge together in their unit. Emphasis for all is on getting the first elk down. If the honcho kills first, then he goes into a supporting role for the others. If one of the others scores, then honcho and unfilled-tag-guy team up, hunting both areas. 3rd guy joins them and backs off if they get into elk, or scouts whichever unit the 2 are not hunting in that day.
