Help me gear up....Topic 3....ARROWS/BROADHEADS

I know this is often personal preference and what shots best out your bow. For me I still have some exploring to do to find a good combo that shoots well. The discussion here will be simple....

Minimum grain

I don't expect the needs to change much from whitetail to elk as far as total bow setup. It's not like changing from a .243 deer rifle to a .300 Mag elk gun.

This depends on your draw weight, draw length, and bow. In general for elk - you want a high quality fixed head like VPA, muzzy, Montec, Striker, Shuttle T, etc.

Weight and cutting diameter depend.

I shoot a 434 grain (total), 300 spine arrow, 125 grain VPA/Muzzy/Shuttle T, out of a 72 lb carbon spyder, 29" draw, 300 FPS.

I know it happened from an unseen circumstance, but if would have had the extra 3/4" cuts, you might have been able to see my bull on the meat pole....
we ran into some guys while at the café in Idaho. after hearing my story, they told me about these broadheads. they showed me some pics of their elk, taken with them over the last couple of years. massive wound holes....

Agree with this. There is no minimum diameter needed, the vitals on an elk are huge. If you need an extra half inch to make a difference what you needed was more practice not different equipment.

The grains will depend on your setup and how much weight you want at the front of your arrow.

So here in Oregon we can't use mechanicals, barbed, or any over 1.75" cutting dia. My partner and i am shooting 100g. crimson talons they have 3 main curved blades with 3 smaller ones in between, 6 blades total. the elk me and my partner both stuck this year had 1.5" holes in them and booth dropped in under 50 yards.
