Looks like I should be taking the first step to losing my elk hunting virginity....and during the last week of archery season to boot!

Well....I weren't going with a fully guided deal.

I've had some guys that are not ready to commit to going in 2015. That kinda changed things. So what I am doing is looking at a drop camp with Eagle Mtn Outfitters. I was going to have to rent horses anyway so this is easier.

Haha....I have voted third party 3 out of the last 5 elections. While I take voting serious I am at a point where me or my wife one will get a write-in vote for prez....

Tell me about it. It must admit that my archery skills are terribly lacking. I hunted sparingly with stick and string growing up. I spent about 15-16 years away from a bow and just picked it back up 2 years ago. I have never taken a deer with a bow but I have only had one opportunity to take a shot at one. I will be spending a lot of time this summer shooting a 50 yard pin (which surprisingly I am probably better at than my 30 yard pin....go figure.) My groupings are terrible and I don't know if I should blame bow or shooter. Right now I know that I have the occasional "release flinch".

You got right after it-a man of action! Looks like great country, around 9-11K elev per the pics on outfitter's website. The aspens will be about @ their peak during your hunt. Please keep us posted as your adventure appproaches. A good LAS (local archery shop) might be useful in improving shooting, if equipment or tuning is an issue. Plenty of expertise about archery technique and tackle in this group, just ask. Good luck

Learn to use back tension to fire that trigger. It was a game changer for me.

you definitely got that right. no more trigger flinching.... had a pro archery shooter show me that. I also 2nd having a shop pro watch you shoot and tell you what you need to inprove on.

Thankfully I am surrounded by guys that know archery. One of the guys going with me shoots a lot of tournaments and another buddy grew up shooting competitive archery.

Do you know what camp you are going to be in?? Upper coffee pot??? Get in the best shape of your life and practice shooting up and down steep terrain and side hills. Ask for contact info for Dan from Michigan .

I'd be interested in a review of these guys. Right now I am scheduled to be in Colorado until 2017. If I can't manage to get an elk on my own I may look for a guide on my final years hunt. Keep us informed on how the hunt and process goes.

It will be self guided but they will help by pointing me in the right direction. Right now it looks like an archery hunt in 2015 and a big group rifle hunt in '16 or '17. My boys needed more time to prepare. I will pass anything I find out on.

Coffee Pot was mentioned. I had asked about Soap Basin. Jon said he had the first week and last week available. I'm taking the last if I can get one other person to commit. If all else fails there may be an opening for a complete stranger to go with me!
