Anyone else looking forward to trying some new elk hunting calls?
I am placing an order for some glacier country call, from Troy, as well as some from Phelps game calls.
Really looking forward to practicing with these. I concentrated on my bugles more than my cow calling last year so its something I am making a point to do.
Anyone else wanting to post some sounds up? There are some great callers around here willing to give feedback. I will start it out once I receive my calls.
Start practicing! Calling is a tool. Just the same as shooting, map reading and fitness. Each one can help you better prepare for the stinky beasts of September. Sharpen them all

Not from what I have heard! haha. Hoping you are one of the guys to critique some of us. Awesome thing you did, as far as putting on that little seminar for fellow elk nuts. Just wish I could have been there. Always enjoy your input. So thank you!

Which ones do you have lined up, Paul?! I went with Jason's recommendations and going back to my calls I feel comfortable with for Troy's. Deadly weapon two worked for me last season. Double reed that has a little softer stretch than his others. Love it.

I finally got some time to practice and try some calls out. Man do I need more time to spend on calling (still wiping the dust off). Feel free to post your own sounds up and we can discuss how to improve! Let me know what you guys think of the calls.
And for anyone starting out, recording and playing back your sounds can really help with improving your calling. Elknut talks about it on his dvds and it sure does help!

Question Brent, is your tube covered? I hear a lot of tube noise[plastic]. This is something I hear from a lot of people. I cover my tubes with polar fleece or if the end rolls in I remove the rolled in end. I get a cleaner sound this way.
Bugles have a good change of pitch and not bad rhythm. The grunts and chuckles have good timing but are missing the breath that elk take[sucking air] to have enough air for the next chuckle/grunt. Many people are uncomfortable with this action but it makes the sound complete. And you won't swallow your call if it fits your mouth right.
You have a good basic cow sound, learn to vary pitch, speed or transition and length. Do you put your tongue on the call in the same place all the time? Try using your tongue off center it will change the sound.

Thanks for the feedback. The tube is covered and I am actually using sound dampeners on it as well. 3 total.
I will add the air to my calling between grunts and chuckles. Little details like that I tend to over look. In those two cow clips I was using the same mouth/tongue position. I really wanted to practice on the 'basic' before jumping into anything to elaborate. I will definitely work on it though. Again, Thank you!.

Brent, you are more than ready for the elkwoods! Your bugles were very good & your cow sounds will get it done no problem. I thought you sounded very realistic. When a guy is calling online as you did for others to hear he generally gives his style of calling as he would use in the woods. Yours was very nicely done with quality sounds. You could find elk with your believable sounds. All one needs now when using bull sounds is to adjust his cadence & intensity to each individual encounter such as are you calling cows form a bull or are you bugling to locate elk! --- Your cow sounds were clean & I'm sure you were just working on tone more than anything. In a real calling situation you may find it necessary to change pitch, volume & length of mews & whines depending on the elk you are working & his aggressive response or action. There's not much time to show all that on sound cloud but I can see you possess all the needed attributes to be very successful at calling elk in close!

Too, I will say sound cloud adds a bit of a tinny sound on everyones calling, I bet your sounds are much cleaner sounding in person! Nice job!

Pretty damn good Brent for just blowing the dust off your calls . Great range/various notes on your bugles; grunts sound good but as GS mentioned, the "OHH" (distinct sound of sucking air in between each grunt) needs to be a bit more pronounced (I can hear you're doing it but it's not coming through loud and clear on the recording); realy like the sound of your chuckles... I'd be cow calling my way into you if I heard those on elk mountain; you're hitting a great cow sound also but as Elknut and GS mentioned, work a bit on varying the pitch, length, and transition into follow on or supplementary cow noises (sometimes that can be accomplished by starting with your tongue a bit lower, or, even opening or closing your mouth a bit/slightly cupping your hand over your mouth and directing the sound left/right, etc. Very nice early practice session!

Very good points on things to work on here over the off season. I actually found an old thread with RJ, Slim, Craig, Gselkhunter and a few others, where you were doing something similar(posting up sounds and breaking them down). Still picking up notes and trying to mimic you guys. Very helpful stuff.
If any one else is wanting to practice, this is a great time to do it. Take a look at elk nuts video clips if you dont have his dvds. Very good stuff. Even dig up old threads like I just talked about. Another great one is Troys (glacier Country Hunting Calls) how to sound clips, where he breaks the basic sounds down.
These guys are great callers!

Sounds great to me and as we all have our own sounds stay with what you have. Try to keep your own sounds and not to sound like anyone else. That's the key to calling in bulls !!

Giving this thread a bump for some guys to start practicing for the competition. Its a good way to practice and learn a few things from these guys. There are some VERY! good callers on this site willing to help you out.
I tried a little practice run before work today and yes I had to wipe the dust off again.....you can even hear my drop the tube . Oh well, it should give you an idea of the 20 second break downs. One thing I learned about it, is that it goes by a lot quicker than you might think!

Post up some sounds you guys would want to work on.

Something I need to work on, so I will add it for you too, Tigger. Vary the cow sounds if you can. Play with tongue position and changing the pitch. To me the cow calls you are doing, sound good for a response, but seem frantic or urgent. That is the type of 'emotion' I am hearing from your calls. Keep pitch tone and intensity in mind when calling.
Less of the EEEah and more of an eeeaah. haha if that makes sense to you.
