Simple eats?

Postby six » 10 31, 2014 •  [Post 1]

This year breakfast consisted of oatmeal and protein powder. Lunch was couple pbj whole wheat tortilla shells. Dinner usually consisted of a can of Cambells Chunky Soup and some chips. Snacks throughout the day were peanuts, venison jerky, protein bars, etc. Oh and lots and lots of water.

We had a lot of burger, brats, eggs, pork chops, etc in the cooler, but when we made it back to camp it was just easier to open up a can of soup and set it on the stove. Stir it every 5 minutes and wala dinner is served.

What other quick and easy meals are you guys eating after a long day of hunting and hauling meat.

We typically bring a lot of meals that we cook and freeze before going. Throw it in a pot when you get back to camp and heat it up on the stove for 10-15 minutes or so and you are good to go. Hot dishes, chili, etc all work great and taste awesome after a day of working your butt off.

For me and my partners there are to important factors: Dinner has to be really quick and easy to make and we don't want much cleanup. Doing dishes is out of the question! So it's Mountain House meals. They are good once you figure out which ones you prefer and they always fill you up. I also buy their Neapolitan ice cream. My other dessert is Jim Beam & Coke. They tell me I snore but I wouldn't know. :D

For lunch it's elk jerky, chips, an apple or orange, and summer sausage and cheese. I also pack granola bars and some candy bars (Snickers and Heath bars) and for pounding out hills without pounding down my water I keep a couple Jolly Ranchers handy.

My partner eats oatmeal for breakfast. I don't do breakfast. Just a huge orange juice before I head out.... and when I get back. I love orange juice and I think it does the body good. I can't remember the last time I got sick.

If by chance there comes a reason that we need to head out of camp and go to town I go to a good restaurant and I barely look at the menu. I get a giant steak with a salad and baked or mashed potatoes... and a couple beers from a local craft brewery.

We have everything made and frozen before we go. We set out what ever we are going to have so it can thaw and then reheat it when we get back to camp. Easy, minimal mess, and tastes delicious! For lunch I have either elk/beef burritos or chorizo wraps vacuum sealed. Snakes are snickers, jerky, and a nut mixture from Costco.

yep i'm a pre-cook and freeze guy, I usually do breakfast burritos(venison/peppers/cheese/eggs/potatoes) make about 10-12 of those, than left overs for the previous week or so frozen, reheat and your good too go in the evenings.... lunch is just snacking really, protein bars, PB and Bacon sandwich, maybe and extra breakfast burrito in the pack, and the most important a good stiff drink either some beer or a sea breeze (OJ/cranberry juice/good vodka),

My meals this year, roughly 4100 calories a day, these were pretty easy.

Breakfast: Mountain House Breakfast Skillet + a packet of Olive Oil (This is the only thing I'd like to change out, was getting really sick of these.) 1 x Hydrate and Recover Packet. 1 x Starbucks Via Packet.

Lunch / Snacks: 3 x Honey Stinger Waffles. 3 x Packets of Justin's Almond Butter. 5 oz Mixed Nuts. 1 x Hydrate and Recover Packet. 1 x Starbucks Via Packet.

Dinner: Mountain House Mac and Cheese + a packet of Olive Oil. 1 x Hydrate and Recover Packet. When I'm at the truck: One glass of Dalmore Single Malt Scotch on ice :D

Under 2lbs a day if you're worried about weight. Everything but the Mountain House (And the scotch) fit in a quart sized ziploc bag so was easy to pack / plan out a day. Backup food was a bag of apples, bagels, homemade granola bars at the truck when I needed a little extra.

For longer stays I keep it easy. Ill warm up soup, or hot water. Every minute spent cooking takes away sleep time.
I bring a number of pre made sandwiches, generally egg, peppers onion and mayo. fresh fruit and veggies, granola bars, nuts , packaged tuna and crackers, spray or real cheese.
this yea keeping hydrated was easier with the cool weather. I have an energy drink sometime in the morning

What does the Olive Oil do? I take a flaxseed oil capsule for my cholesterol and it helps with my joints. Any correlation between the two?

I played around with Bear Creek Creamy Chicken soup and a can of chunk chicken (??? ) the other day and it wasn't bad.
http://www.bearcreekcountrykitchens.com/soups.php
Better than the Mountain House stuff. So it may go in the pack in a few weeks for the late cow rifle hunt here in NM. I also plan on making up a batch of Green Chile stew from scratch and either freezing and bagging it in the vacuum sealer or putting it in 1 quart jars. I like the idea of the jars since glass doesn't get holes as easy as the vacuum sealer bags but the bags are so much easier and lighter. I have a couple of weeks to sort it out in my head.
After that, Jerky, almonds and a nice nightcap.

Six, I think the olive oil is to add some clean fat to the diet to help absorption of fat soluble vitamins and minerals. Also to add dense caloric source. Sometimes the modern "low fat" diet isn't the right diet especially if your burning up 5-10K Cal per day and only taking in 4K Cal at best.

For the record - I didn't mind the olive oil, it was the MH Breakfast Skillet that I was choking my way through by the end. The olive oil was just for the extra calories and some good fat - it has one of the highest # of calories per weight (~250 kcal / oz). Mixed Nuts were 170-180 kcal / oz, the Honey Stingers and Almond Butter were ~160 / oz. Basically I was going for small package, lightest weight, enough calories, easy to prepare, plus a good blend of Sugars, Carbs, Protein, Fat.

For comparison, some other calories / oz:

Cheddar Cheese: 114
Pepperoni: 132
Apple: 15
Bagel: 73
Peanut Butter: 167

I cannot stand MH eggs. Flavorless chunks of yellow foam. In the past I had the plain bacon and eggs. Sucked! This season I tried one breakfast skillet. Not much better. No more MH eggs!

I ate a MH dinner or two for breakfast though. Much better.

truck camping..

all bets are off..i cook everything at home, stews, pasta with sauce, etc..and freeze it in ziploc bags. i pull a bag in the morning and set it in the drink cooler. reheat and eat.

i keep it simple, but i dont like a lot of processed stuff. can of stew..or my own stew. easy choice.

Well I've always liked the idea of food in the bag like the MH but I am way to cheap! I just head to the supermarket and pick up the noodles or rice that all you do is add water to and cook over the fire in a small pot ! They come in multiple flavours and actually taste good unlike many of the other so called food in a bag choices. I actually eat these at home for lunch as well.

Some flavours are:

Made by Compliments for $1.99
Three cheese pasta and sauce
Butter and Herb pasta and sauce
Sour cream and chives pastas
Creamy Carbonara

Knorr Side Kicks for $2.00
Creamy Chicken Fusilli (Noodles)
Chicken Noodles
Country mushroom and Rice
Chicken and Rice

Basically cook them on the fire stirring occasionally and to the desired thickness !!

Trust me they taste good and I slice up some apples and banana's or celery sticks and chow down !!

My wife recently started cooking a batch of eggs in a cupcake pan. Nothing new, but is a super easy way to do 12 breakfast sandwiches up in no time.

For a hot breakfast that doesn't take too long to make, we take an egg, cooked sausage, chopped onion and green pepper, a little shredded cheese and put it all in a ziplock bag....mix it up until it is the consistency of an omelette and throw the bag and contents in boiling water. Once the eggs are cooked take them out wrap them in a tortilla shell and BOOM you have an awesome breakfast burrito!! A little salsa on it and man you got a hell of start to your day!!! Enjoy!

X2...on the MH eggs.... :(. And the bacon bits all end up at the bottom.

Anyone try " Good to Go" meals? Yet? A new company and their offering 3 meals currently and will be doing more. They offered me a discount code on a purchase, think I might buy on of each and try.... I'll report back. :).

For roadside camping I got one or those little portable propane grills so when I get back to camp I put a steak or a pork chop or sausage or whatever on it and in no time it's ready along with anything else from the cooler, maybe a cucumber or other vegetable and it's a gormet dinner without any dishes.

For breakfast
1 packet of oatmeal
cup of coffee
1 granola/protien bar

Mid Morning & Afternoon Snacks:
Granola bar- really like the PROBars- Meal bars ( really hearty and filling)

Lunch:
sometimes I will pack an MRE meal (just the entree) so I can have a hot meal in the field
OR Bagle Sandwich with pepperjack cheese and ham OR PBJ sandwich
And Hydrate Recover/Energy Focus drink

Dinner:
Usually and can of soup or chili with my Favorite-- camp stove pizza-rollup (super easy and super simple, Tortilla in a pan, put shredded cheese till it starts to melt, add pepporoni slices, maybe a smidge of pizza sauce) roll it up and eat with soup and a cold beer! Great calorie replacement.
OR Mountain House Meals with a cold beer! Every dinner ends with a cold beer.. or 2! ha ha

Nutritional label.....Mnt. House Vs. Good to Go...

Bottom line, the G2G Three Bean Chili was VERY good...and a little cheaper than MH.

*** keep in mind the serving size***

Currently, these meals are Vegitarian and Gluten free, and I was told they will have "meat" products / menu soon.

So, thought I would share...
