Archery during Rifle season?

Postby six » 11 04, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Are you nuts? You may ask. We I'm a die hard Archery Nut if I may. I've been rifle hunting the past 2 years due to coaching my sons football team. I did a little research and turns out I can hunt with a bow during rifle season. Oh and this year my shot was 40 yards with a rifle. I know I wouldn't be hunting September bulls, but at least I would be carrying my bow.

Any of you guys archery hunt during rifle seasons? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm a dark timber kinda guy so most of my encounters are up close anyway.

Back when I lived in Washington, we had a December archery season that I hunted quite a bit. It's definitely more challenging then September, but we had fairly good success. Snow is your friend; get on a fresh set of tracks and keep on them. Go slow and glass A LOT. I mostly hunted in the timber.

absolutely!
Now I know it is not the same as western slope hunting and don't get me wrong but there are tons of us down here in TX that hunt the entire rifle deer seasons with bow only ( 2 months long). there is lots of discussion on the ins and outs of this at texasbowhunter.com.

I've been considering this too. But I have a new rifle just begging to be taken out this Nov.

My dad (on the right) was hunting with a recurve during rifle season when he spotted this bull and some cows. They were out of his range, and they eventually winded him and came out in front of me. He was still watching the bull when I shot him. Had he been carrying a rifle he would have been able to take this bull.

He is very dedicated to archery.

Last two bucks have been with a bow during rifle season. But deer and elk well those are two different beasts intirely. Only time I have considered it for elk is if I ever draw my utah le tag. Archery is over between the 7th and 14th of September depending on the year and any weapon is open the following week. So depending on the tag I choose I will be carrying a rifle and a bow. Still leaning toward bow only because it will save me about five years to be the high point guy in any given unit.

Femoral is your dad carrying his bow this year after missing a chance at that toad?
