bow string question

as most of you know, my string twisted in Idaho, causing the peep to rotate so I couldn't see through it. so I took my bow to the local bow shop and had them fix it. he told me that I didn't do anything to make the string twist he said that it happened from the temperature change. I am having a hard time believing this. is it true?

Not likely temperature. Sometimes moisture/humidity can affect string stability but not likely either with todays fibers. New strings need to be "shot in" but thats only a few hundred shots. I have yet to see any string untwist a little. Cheap strings or hand made strings not built under tension can untwist a lot

maybe a strand "inside" broke?

i shoot a lot, and with a lot of people. i've never seen a peep just spin so badly you cannot see thru it. once, and the owner told me later everyone thought a strand broke.

the string was handmade. not sure if it was made in house or not. the shop is reputable....

In my experience hand made strings and cables always creep a little as they settle in. Not an issue with durability, just have to readjust after a while. If it continues, you might have a problem

he pulled the string off and retwisted it and put on a new d loop. so I am back into the game. I will just have to constantly draw during the hunt to make sure everything is still inline.... if I would have in Idaho, I could be showing off my first bull.....

Do you always practice draw with an arrow nocked??

IF not your going to squeeze the d-loop together causing torque issues. This may also cause your D-loop to twist on your string which will basically make it seem like your string twisted... Just a thought!

you make it sound as that it is the string builders fault that you didn't kill your bull. ultimately it is up to the hunter to make sure his or her equipment is up to the task at hand. also cheap strings and handmade strings should not even be in the same sentence as someone stated earlier in this thread, not all are made to the same standard but some of the best strings out there are handmade with no creep issues whatsoever.

how did I do that Kelly? with all of the shooting I have done without the string twisting and screwing up my peep, I didn't think that it could happen. actually didn't know that it could happen. I went back to the bow shop so that they could tell me what I did wrong, so that I would never do it again.... I was surprised on what their answer was. all I am saying is that now that I know it can happen, I will make damn sure that I keep checking for it so that it doesn't happen again. if I had known, I would have made sure that I did check...... as I had plenty of time.

Never had a string move from temps. AZ you wake up in the teens and afternoons go into the 90's.

Maybe if you leave it in a hot car or something.

Thinking about this more. Do you think temp changes put more stress on the string than us drawing on the bow? I don't get it either bud.

nope, I haven't shot the bow yet, since I had it fixed. I have only been able to sit one time for deer so far. I am so busy being den leader for 2 of my boys this, its crazy....

I have had no rapid movement of my peep. I have to adjust it about half a turn once a year to make it perfect. Even when it is off I can still see through my peep. I use a 3/16 Meta peep. I have had no problems from -10 deg to 90 degrees. I use strings made by Prostrings. They are out of Minnesota.

Gary, as far as I knew from your post you got the string put on and went hunting, with no shoot in time. never said that you have been shooting it for a month or whatever. I have never had a peep go from being dead on to not being able to see out of it within a shot or two, even with the crappy factory strings that most come with. as far as continually pulling your bow back to check that it is good while you are on a hunt just doesn't sound practical. I don't know how your string was made or what materials were used but you should make sure that your builder stretches the string to minimize the possibility of any peep rotation.

How long was the sting on the bow prior to your hunt? What material was the string made from?

The string stretched, likely didn't have anything to do with the weather.

I have no idea what the string is made out of, I didn't ask.... I shot the bow the day we got into camp and everything was fine.

Most new strings will settle some after being put on. Most all will do it within the first 100 shots.
